Prashant Pandey Celebrates Success of ‘O Sajni Re’ with Aamir Khan
Lyricist Prashant Pandey has praised the collaborative efforts of Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao, and Ram Sampath in crafting the award-winning song “O Sajni Re” from the film Laapataa Ladies. In a recent statement, Pandey highlighted the clarity of vision that the filmmakers brought to the project, which significantly impacted his creative process.
The journey of creating “O Sajni Re” began with Ram Sampath providing Pandey with an initial brief. He described how he instinctively wrote the first draft, which resonated with the filmmakers. According to Pandey, “Kiran Rao ma’am and Ram sir were clear that the film spoke a simple, village-rooted language—honest, direct, and uncomplicated, without heavy metaphors.” He added that Aamir Khan specifically sought a bidaai song that felt “playful, hopeful, and forward-looking.”
Pandey expressed that working under such transparent guidance on his debut film was an enriching experience. He noted, “Writing simply became the biggest lesson.”
The success of “O Sajni Re” has surpassed expectations, with Pandey reflecting on the emotional connection it established with audiences. He said, “I realised the song had truly connected with audiences when it began travelling beyond the film. That’s quite an overwhelming response, which made me feel I had written something honest.” The song’s recognition across various platforms has been described by Pandey as a “beautiful, unexpected blessing.”
Following the acclaim of Laapataa Ladies, Pandey’s career has gained momentum. He reported receiving positive feedback from the industry, leading to multiple opportunities to collaborate with various filmmakers and composers. Since the film’s release, he has co-written “Humsafar” from Saiyaara, contributed to the series Gutar Gu, and is involved in several new projects, including the independent film Ghar.
Pandey shared a personal connection to Laapataa Ladies, noting that he hails from Suwasra in Madhya Pradesh, the same region where the film was shot. He stated, “Writing for the film felt very personal to me. The language, rhythms, and everyday life felt instinctive.” His experience during the COVID-19 pandemic, living in his hometown surrounded by familiar landscapes, further influenced his songwriting.
As he moves forward in his career, Pandey remains grateful for the trust placed in him by industry professionals. He concluded by emphasizing how his small-town sensibility has shaped his artistic voice, despite having lived and worked in larger cities.
Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao, and Jyoti Deshpande, features a cast that includes Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Ravi Kishan, and Chhaya Kadam. The film’s music, composed by Ram Sampath, has played a significant role in its overall appeal.
