MCCY Calls Jack Neo’s AI Tribute to Lee Kuan Yew “Respectful”

A recent music video by filmmaker Jack Neo, featuring an artificial intelligence (AI) generated image of Singapore’s founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, has been assessed as “respectful” by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY). The video, which promotes the song titled “We Are Singapore,” was shared on social media on August 18, 2023.
In the music video, an AI-generated depiction of the late Mr. Lee delivers a heartfelt message, saying in a blend of Mandarin and English, “I wish Singapore a happy 60th birthday. Happy birthday.” The video aims to celebrate Singapore’s 60th year of independence and reflects on the themes of unity highlighted in Prime Minister Lawrence Wong‘s National Day Rally speech.
Public Reaction and MCCY’s Assessment
The music video has sparked a mixed response on social media, with some viewers praising its lyrics and emotional depth, while others have criticized the use of AI technology to recreate Mr. Lee’s likeness. In response to the public discourse, the MCCY stated, “The use of AI to recreate Mr. Lee Kuan Yew wishing Singapore a happy birthday is part of Mr. Jack Neo’s intent for the video to commemorate Singapore’s 60th year of independence. We assess that the use of Mr. Lee’s image is respectful.”
In an interview with 8world, Jack Neo expressed his admiration for Mr. Lee, acknowledging the significant impact he had on the nation. Neo reflected on the sadness surrounding Mr. Lee’s passing, stating, “Using modern AI, I have let Mr. Lee wish Singapore a happy birthday.” He emphasized that this creative approach felt “very meaningful” to him.
Guidelines on the Use of Lee Kuan Yew’s Image
The MCCY has established guidelines regarding the appropriate use of Mr. Lee’s image in creative works. These guidelines allow individuals to feature his likeness for the purpose of national identification and public education about the achievements of Singapore’s pioneer generation. However, this is contingent on ensuring that such representations “accord dignity and respect” to Mr. Lee’s memory.
For the music video, Neo took an innovative approach by writing the song’s lyrics while utilizing AI for its composition, arrangement, and vocal elements. This fusion of traditional and modern techniques aims to resonate with a diverse audience, reflecting Singapore’s journey and aspirations as the country celebrates a significant milestone.
The SG60 celebration not only marks a historical moment for Singapore but also highlights the ongoing relevance of Mr. Lee’s legacy in contemporary society. As discussions about the role of AI in creative expression continue, Neo’s project serves as a focal point for evaluating how technology can honor historical figures while engaging the public in meaningful conversations.
