Indonesian Film “Norma” Explores Complex Family Betrayal
The Indonesian film Norma: Antara Mertua Dan Menantu (Norma: Between Mother-in-law and Son-in-law) has gained significant traction on Netflix since its release on August 14, 2023. Based on a true story that captured public interest on social media, the film dives into a tumultuous affair between a woman’s husband and her mother.
Set against the backdrop of seemingly domestic bliss, the narrative follows Norma Risma, portrayed by Tissa Biani, and her husband, Irfan Wardhana, played by Yusuf Mahardika. Initially, their marriage appears idyllic, with Irfan demonstrating a close bond with Norma’s family. However, the story takes a dark turn as Irfan’s relationship with Norma’s biological mother, Rina, represented by Wulan Guritno, is unveiled. The ensuing scandal not only jeopardizes Norma’s marriage but also profoundly impacts her father, Abdul, played by Rukman Rosadi.
The true origins of this story can be traced back to real-life experiences shared by Norma Risma herself on her TikTok account. The overwhelming public response led to a film adaptation by Dee Company, which premiered in Indonesian theaters on March 31, 2023. Norma was actively involved in the screenplay, collaborating with acclaimed writer Oka Aurora to bring her story to the screen.
As the film continues to resonate with audiences, it has become one of the top three most-watched films of the week on Netflix in Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Dee Company recently celebrated this success, stating, “Norma is not just a story but a harsh slap about trust, family, and betrayal.”
The film’s compelling exploration of family dynamics and the consequences of betrayal has sparked conversations about relationships and trust, making it a timely addition to the streaming platform. With its engaging narrative and relatable themes, Norma stands out as a significant cinematic achievement in Indonesia’s burgeoning film industry.
