Hong Kong Airlines Celebrates Cultural Heritage with Themed Flight
Hong Kong Airlines has launched a unique initiative celebrating the return of the acclaimed dance drama, “Poetic Dance: The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting,” which will run at the Grand Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre from December 31, 2025, to January 3, 2026. In collaboration with the China Oriental Performing Arts Group and Elite Fun Entertainment Limited, the airline introduced a special themed flight designed to immerse passengers in the rich aesthetics of Chinese culture while in the air.
The themed flight, titled “The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting — Hong Kong Airlines Invites You to Unfold the Scroll in the Skies,” aims to blend the elegance of contemporary stage art with a creative travel experience. Passengers will be taken on a cultural journey that reflects the beauty of the Song Dynasty, particularly inspired by the renowned Northern Song dynasty masterpiece “A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains.” This production not only showcases the artistry of dance poetry but also embodies the serene and poetic spirit characteristic of the Song era.
Transforming Air Travel into a Cultural Experience
On December 29, 2025, flight HX239 took off from Shanghai Hongqiao to Hong Kong, featuring a cabin transformed into a mobile scroll inspired by the classic painting. The aircraft’s design incorporated vibrant landscapes of mountains and rivers, merging modern artistry with the traditional aesthetics of the Song Dynasty. This transformation created an immersive atmosphere that allowed passengers to engage with Chinese culture while traveling at 30,000 feet.
As part of the experience, three lead dancers from the production joined the flight as special guests. They experienced the airline’s renowned service first-hand and interacted with passengers, distributing exclusive commemorative gifts designed specifically for this themed flight. Hong Kong Airlines also provided custom boarding passes, while cabin crew wore scarves and badges reflecting the elegance of the Song Dynasty. The onboard environment was enhanced by inflight music and announcements that cultivated a serene and graceful ambience.
Promoting Cultural Appreciation Globally
Hong Kong Airlines emphasizes its commitment to connecting culture through flight, as stated by President Mr. Jeff Sun. “We are truly honoured to bring the renowned dance drama ‘Poetic Dance: The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting’ aboard our flight,” he remarked. “Through this collaboration, we hope to allow more travellers to experience the charm of traditional Chinese art and contemporary creativity during their journeys.”
This partnership between Hong Kong Airlines and the China Oriental Performing Arts Group exemplifies the integration of art and aviation, reinterpreting traditional beauty through modern creativity. As the airline continues to promote Chinese culture on a global stage, they express a desire to develop cultural-tourism initiatives that showcase the elegance of Chinese heritage.
As anticipation builds for the upcoming performances in Hong Kong, this innovative initiative not only elevates the travel experience but also serves as a bridge for cultural exchange, allowing the air travel experience to resonate with the rich traditions of Chinese art.
