Actor Glen Powell has announced the release of his new sports comedy series, Chad Powers, set to premiere on Hulu on March 12, 2024. The show, which follows a disgraced college football player who reinvents himself, aims to fill a noticeable gap in sports-themed television. According to Powell, there has been a lack of series that effectively capture the spirit of college football, making this project feel like a significant achievement for both him and the audience.

Powell, known for his role in Top Gun: Maverick, collaborates with Michael Waldron, the creator of Rick and Morty. The narrative centers on Powell’s character, Russell Holliday, who disguises himself as a Southern rookie walk-on named Chad Powers. The premise is inspired by a 2022 ESPN sketch featuring former NFL quarterback Eli Manning in the same role.

The series showcases a talented supporting cast, including Steve Zahn, Toby Huss, Perry Mattfeld, Clayne Crawford, and Wynn Everett. For Waldron, the story goes beyond football; it delves into themes of personal redemption. He describes Russell as a flawed character who grapples with his mistakes and self-loathing. “His only way out of that isn’t to try and fix himself or forgive himself. He says, ‘I’m going to reinvent myself, be a different guy,'” Waldron explained.

Working with the Mannings was a highlight for Powell, who expressed gratitude for their involvement. “They were so available to us throughout this whole process, which is like a gift,” he said. The aim of the show is to resonate with fans of college and professional football, creating an authentic portrayal of the sport that viewers can relate to.

The enthusiasm surrounding the project indicates a growing interest in sports comedies, particularly in a genre that has been underrepresented in recent years. With its blend of humor and heartfelt moments, Chad Powers is positioned to attract a diverse audience, bridging the gap between sports lovers and comedy fans alike. As Powell emphasizes, the goal is to create a cinematic experience that feels genuine and engaging for everyone, regardless of their level of familiarity with football.
