Fleetwood and McIlroy Lead Europe to Dominance at Ryder Cup
FARMINGDALE, New York: The duo of Tommy Fleetwood and Rory McIlroy, affectionately dubbed “Fleetwood Mac” by fans, delivered a commanding performance in the opening rounds of the Ryder Cup on Friday. Competing at Bethpage Black, they secured a decisive 5&4 victory against the American pair of Collin Morikawa and Harris English. This win marked their third consecutive success in Ryder Cup foursomes, echoing their previous triumphs, including a key role in Europe’s victory in Rome in 2023.
The event kicked off to an enthusiastic reception from home fans in Long Island, eager to support their team. Despite the raucous atmosphere, Fleetwood and McIlroy quickly made their mark on the competition, showcasing their synergy and skill on the course.
McIlroy expressed his confidence in Fleetwood during a post-match interview, stating, “When you’ve got a partner like Tommy, you can play with so much freedom and so much trust in your game because you know you have someone that’s going to back you up.” He emphasized the comfort that comes from knowing Fleetwood is there to support him, especially during challenging moments.
By the end of the morning foursomes, Team Europe was leading the match series with a score of 3-1. The competition continues through the weekend, with fourball matches scheduled for the afternoon.
Both players entered the Ryder Cup following a successful 2025 season. Fleetwood achieved his first PGA Tour victory at the Tour Championship, while McIlroy completed a career Grand Slam at Augusta. Reflecting on their collaboration, McIlroy noted, “I’ve looked forward to my ‘Fleetwood Mac’ reunion concert since that last putt dropped in Rome.” His confidence in Fleetwood’s abilities allows him to play freely, reinforcing their partnership on the course.
As the Ryder Cup progresses, fans eagerly anticipate how this dynamic duo will continue to shape the competition. With their proven track record and strong camaraderie, Fleetwood and McIlroy are poised to lead Team Europe in their quest for victory once again.
