Controversy Hits Miss Universe as Judges Claude Makelele, Omar Harfouch Resign
The Miss Universe pageant faces significant controversy as two judges, former football star Claude Makelele and composer Omar Harfouch, have announced their resignations just days before the finale. This upheaval follows accusations involving Nawat Itsaragrisil, the director of Miss Universe Thailand, who was recorded reprimanding contestants and allegedly insulting Miss Universe Mexico, Fatima Bosch, though he has denied these claims.
Harfouch revealed his decision to leave the judging panel on social media, citing serious concerns about the integrity of the competition. He claimed that a “secret vote” had been conducted to pre-select the top 30 contestants, allegedly involving individuals not officially recognized as judges. Harfouch asserted that at least one of these individuals had a personal relationship with a contestant, raising issues of potential conflict of interest. He warned that judges participating in the pageant could become legally implicated in what he described as “an act of global-scale fraud.”
In a statement the following day, Makelele also announced his departure, citing “unforeseen personal reasons.” He expressed regret over his decision, emphasizing the values of empowerment and diversity that the Miss Universe platform represents. Makelele stated, “I sincerely apologise to the organisation, the contestants, and everyone involved and I hope to be able to contribute in the future under better circumstances.”
The Miss Universe Organization responded to Harfouch’s allegations, asserting that “no impromptu jury has been created.” The organization clarified that the individuals mentioned were part of its Beyond the Crown Program, which operates independently of the competition and the official judging panel. This program aims to promote leadership, service, education, health, inclusion, and charitable efforts.
As the pageant prepares for its next event, Miss Universe 2025 is scheduled to take place in Thailand on November 21, 2023. The recent developments have prompted discussions about the integrity and transparency of beauty competitions, raising questions among stakeholders and fans alike. With the judging panel’s credibility in flux, it remains to be seen how this controversy will affect the event and its participants.
