Cate Blanchett Returns as Valka in Live-Action How to Train Your Dragon 2
Actress Cate Blanchett will reprise her role as the Viking warrior Valka in the upcoming live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon 2. This follows her portrayal of Valka in the original animated trilogy produced by DreamWorks. The film, a project from Universal Pictures, is set to release on June 11, 2027.
Blanchett’s return to the franchise marks a significant transition from animation to live-action cinema. The actress, known for her versatile performances, will join a talented cast that includes Gerard Butler, who reprises his role as Stoick the Vast, Valka’s husband. Alongside Butler, the film will feature actors such as Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, and Harry Trevaldwyn.
Director’s Vision and Character Development
Director Dean DeBlois will return to write, direct, and executive produce the film, having already adapted the first live-action version of the franchise last year. DeBlois expressed his enthusiasm for Blanchett’s involvement, indicating that he had written the character of Valka specifically with her in mind. He stated, “I think she is probably waiting for a script, but I’ve been knocking on that door. I told her it’ll always be hers to turn down first.”
The narrative of How to Train Your Dragon 2 will focus on further adventures for Hiccup, portrayed by Thames. As Valka is his mother, her character plays a crucial role in the storyline, which explores the complexities of family relationships in a fantastical setting.
DeBlois has indicated that Valka is not the only character undergoing changes for the live-action adaptation. The beloved dragon, Toothless, will also mature, reflecting the passage of time in the story. DeBlois elaborated on Toothless’s transformation, noting that as he ages into adulthood, his design and mentality will evolve. He described Toothless as “a very sentient dragon” with opinions and a developing sense of leadership.
Production and Anticipation
The production team includes Marc Platt and Adam Siegel as producers. As anticipation builds for the sequel, fans of the franchise are eager to see how the beloved characters will be portrayed in this new format. The successful animated series has already garnered a significant following, making the transition to live-action a highly anticipated event.
Blanchett’s decision to return to the role of Valka has sparked excitement among fans and industry insiders alike. The actress’s established career and her previous work in the franchise have set high expectations for the upcoming film. With the combination of a stellar cast, a visionary director, and a rich source material from the books by Cressida Cowell, How to Train Your Dragon 2 is poised to capture the hearts of audiences around the globe once again.
