Cameron Young Makes Ryder Cup Debut at Bethpage Black Course
Cameron Young is set to realize a long-held dream as he makes his debut at the Ryder Cup this week. The 28-year-old golfer from Farmingdale, New York, will compete at the renowned Bethpage Black course, a venue where he achieved notable success as an amateur. This moment is particularly significant for Young, who has envisioned this milestone since the course was announced as the Ryder Cup location back in 2013.
Young’s journey to this prestigious tournament has not been without challenges. Earlier this year, he was not among the frontrunners for a spot on the twelve-player team. However, a remarkable late-season performance significantly altered his trajectory. His victory at the Wyndham Championship last month, along with a solo fifth-place finish in the first leg of the FedExCup Playoffs and a share of fourth place at the Tour Championship, propelled him into contention for a spot on the team.
Making the experience even more special, Young previously won the New York State Open at Bethpage Black in 2017, setting a course record with a final-round score of 64. Reflecting on his return to the course, Young noted that, aside from the massive grandstands and the presence of both European and American players, the atmosphere felt familiar. “Walking out on the first tee feels like I was here yesterday,” he remarked.
As he prepares for this high-stakes event, Young acknowledges the importance of learning from his more experienced teammates. He has been proactive in seeking advice, stating, “Just trying to pick up little things here and there. They have all got so much experience and so much wisdom from their times in these events.” This approach underscores his commitment to not only participate but to excel at the Ryder Cup.
Despite his familiarity with the course and bolstered confidence as a golfer, Young anticipates that the tension will be palpable during his opening tee shot. He understands the significance of the moment and expects to feel the nerves that accompany such a high-profile occasion. “Everybody’s got some nerves. You still have to hit it,” he said. Young plans to focus on his routine, aiming to deliver a swing that reflects his recent practice sessions.
With the Ryder Cup set to unfold at Bethpage Black, Young’s journey from a hopeful teenager to a competitor in one of golf’s most prestigious events exemplifies both perseverance and passion. As he steps onto the first tee, all eyes will be on him, ready to witness the culmination of years of dedication and hard work.
