Anuraj Manohar Defends Narivetta as Malayalam Cinema Struggles
Filmmaker Anuraj Manohar has publicly defended his film Narivetta, asserting its profitability despite the ongoing difficulties faced by the Malayalam film industry. Released in May 2023, the film was initially rejected by several major producers before being picked up by the Indian Cinema Company, which marked its debut as a production entity.
The Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) recently reported that of the 184 films released in 2023, fewer than 10 percent have been financially successful. This statistic underscores the precarious state of the industry, which has been grappling with numerous challenges this year. Manohar’s comments come in response to a year-end assessment from the Producers’ Association, which classified only fifteen films as profitable.
In a statement posted on social media, Manohar emphasized the importance of recognizing the individual efforts behind each film. He stated, “It is natural for a director to seek producers, and the success of Narivetta reflects both the vision of the filmmaker and the faith of the production company.” He voiced concerns that blanket evaluations of success could discourage emerging producers and consolidate power among established ones.
The director remarked, “If the intention is to prevent new producers from emerging, the reality is that this opens the field to large corporate companies.” Manohar affirmed that Narivetta has indeed been financially successful, offering to make accounting details public to substantiate this claim. He also highlighted the dedication and hard work that went into the film, citing long hours and the physical toll on the crew as evidence of their commitment.
As discussions for his next film were already in progress, Manohar stressed the necessity of viewing each project as a unique endeavor. He concluded by stating that while industry organizations may issue broad statements regarding box-office performance, individual films like Narivetta illustrate that quality cinema can achieve both critical acclaim and commercial success.
Additionally, the KFCC has expressed frustration with the state government, alleging that it has consistently overlooked the pressing needs of the film industry. This neglect, according to the KFCC, contributes to the current difficulties faced by the sector.
As the year draws to a close, the challenges of the Malayalam film industry remain in sharp focus, with filmmakers like Anuraj Manohar advocating for recognition of diverse efforts and the potential for success amid adversity.
