US Embassy in Singapore Justifies Independence Day Donation Appeal
The United States Embassy in Singapore has defended its recent request for donations from local businesses to support upcoming Independence Day celebrations. This clarification follows the circulation of a letter requesting financial contributions, which sparked discussions online.
In response to inquiries from Channel News Asia on January 20, 2026, the embassy emphasized that soliciting support from private sector partners for Independence Day festivities is a standard practice among American embassies globally. The embassy stated, “We plan to host a July 4 celebration befitting the day America celebrates as the most important milestone in our country’s history – 250 years of American Independence.”
The letter, dated January 8, 2026, and signed by US Ambassador Anjani Sinha, highlighted the significance of this year’s celebrations. It not only marks the 250th anniversary of American independence but also commemorates 60 years of diplomatic relations between the United States and Singapore on April 4, 2026. The embassy intends to celebrate these milestones with the Singaporean community throughout the year, emphasizing the partnership between the two nations.
The letter invited businesses to contribute to what it described as a “momentous occasion.” Ambassador Sinha stated, “Our celebration will depend on the generosity of American and Singaporean businesses. Your partnership and financial contributions will help us honour the history we are proud to share and inspire us to look to future opportunities.”
In light of the unique historical significance of this year, the embassy is encouraging companies to consider making larger donations than in previous years. This appeal aims to enhance the celebrations and reflect the spirit of collaboration and friendship between the two countries.
As the United States prepares for its Independence Day celebrations, the embassy’s request illustrates the importance of community support in hosting significant national events abroad. The upcoming festivities promise to be a reminder of the enduring relationship between the US and Singapore, celebrating both shared values and mutual achievements.
