Toa Payoh Unveils 10.8 km of New Cycling Paths for Residents
Residents of Toa Payoh can now enjoy enhanced cycling convenience with the completion of 10.8 kilometers of new cycling paths, officially launched on October 18, 2023. The project was inaugurated by Cai Yinzhou, Member of Parliament and Grassroots Adviser to the Bishan-Toa Payoh Grassroots Organisations. This new network aims to provide safer routes for residents to access key amenities such as the HDB Hub, local markets, food centres, parks, and schools.
The cycling paths significantly improve connectivity to several transport nodes, including the North-South Line stations at Toa Payoh and Braddell, as well as the Caldecott MRT station on the Circle Line and Thomson-East Coast Line. According to the Land Transport Authority (LTA), the newly implemented bicycle crossing at Lorong 8 Toa Payoh enhances access to the nearby Kallang Park Connector and facilitates cycling to neighboring areas like Bishan, Ang Mo Kio, and Kallang.
Residents can now cycle to Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park in under 15 minutes and continue along the Kallang River to Marina Bay. This improved cycling infrastructure not only promotes healthy transportation options but also encourages recreational activities among residents.
Infrastructure Enhancements and Safety Improvements
The completed cycling paths also include innovative use of space. Approximately 2.8 kilometers of open drains have been reconstructed into underground systems, enabling the top surfaces to be utilized for walking and cycling. Additionally, road space along Lorong 1A Toa Payoh has been repurposed into a dedicated cycling path, featuring two new raised zebra crossings designed to enhance accessibility for both cyclists and pedestrians.
Other notable improvements comprise new bypass paths at over 15 bus stops and widened pedestrian crossings at more than eight traffic junctions, aiming to bolster safety for both residents and commuters. The LTA has also installed an extra 64 bicycle parking racks at Braddell MRT station to facilitate first- and last-mile journeys for cyclists.
Future Cycling Network Goals
These developments are part of the broader Islandwide Cycling Network programme initiated by the LTA, which aims to expand the cycling path networks across all towns in Singapore. The goal is to establish approximately 1,300 kilometers of cycling paths by 2030, fostering a bicycle-friendly environment and encouraging more sustainable modes of transport.
As Toa Payoh embraces this new cycling infrastructure, residents can look forward to a safer and more accessible community for cycling enthusiasts. The initiative reflects Singapore’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its residents while promoting eco-friendly transportation alternatives.
