The Ministry of National Defense in Taiwan has proposed a substantial budget of NT$8.1 billion (approximately US$264.14 million) to acquire new T112 rifles, intended to become the standard infantry weapon for the army. This initiative will span from next year through 2029, according to documents submitted to the Legislative Yuan.

As lawmakers begin reviewing the budget request, they will evaluate the procurement of 86,114 T112 rifles, along with associated accessories such as laser illuminators. The T112, which is based on the AR-15 design and chambered for the 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge, is noted for its enhanced precision, high rate of fire, and laser illumination capabilities, all aimed at improving infantry effectiveness.

Transition to the T112 Rifle

The new rifles, which commenced mass production last year, will replace the T91 rifles that have served in the military for two decades. The army plans to purchase 14,248 rifles this year and an additional 24,534 rifles next year. The distribution will cover regular army units, the Military Police Command, and the Armed Forces Reserve.

The phased-out T91 rifles are set to be reassigned to reserve units, acting as substitutes for the T65K2 rifles, which were first produced in 1976. This transition aims to enhance military capabilities without changing the standard-issue cartridge, maintaining consistency in operational procedures.

Developed by the 205th Arsenal of the Armament Bureau, the T112 rifle retains a similar external appearance to the T91 but features a heavier-profile barrel with polygonal rifling that increases accuracy by 30 percent. The improved barrel extends its lifespan to 10,000 rounds, a significant increase from the 6,000 rounds offered by the T91.

Advanced Features and Training

The T112 includes a selection switch allowing for single shots, two-shot bursts, and full-automatic fire, along with an ambidextrous design. An army public relations video released on September 3, 2023, showcased the Army Infantry Training Command utilizing T112 rifles equipped with optical sights, laser illuminators, and foregrips during the training of new recruits.

The incorporation of infrared laser illuminators aids soldiers in effectively utilizing night-vision optics, enhancing their operational capabilities in low-light environments. As the Taiwanese military continues to modernize its equipment, the introduction of the T112 rifle signifies a strategic move towards improved infantry effectiveness and readiness.
