Social Service Agencies Adapt to Rise in Seniors Living Alone
In Singapore, the number of seniors living alone has increased significantly, prompting social service agencies to enhance support systems and rethink engagement strategies. According to the latest sample household survey released by the Housing and Development Board (HDB), the proportion of one-person households rose to 15.6 percent in 2023/2024, more than doubling since 2003. This trend has become more pronounced among those aged 55 and above, who represent nearly three-quarters of these households.
For many seniors, living alone does not equate to loneliness. Sereena Joy Osman, a 68-year-old retiree, has lived independently for 14 years since her mother’s passing. Residing in a Housing and Development Board flat in Clementi, she fills her days with social activities, family engagements, and personal hobbies. “Planning is very important, and prioritising,” Mdm Sereena explained. “After retiring, there are so many activities. You want to do everything, but you just don’t have time.” In case of emergencies, she relies on her neighbours, underscoring that independence can coexist with community support.
Responding to Changing Needs
Social service agencies are now actively adapting to meet the needs of this growing demographic. Henry Tan, a 78-year-old retiree and beneficiary of Lions Befrienders, exemplifies the spirit of independence that many seniors embody. Despite having suffered a stroke, Mr. Tan has lived alone for over 30 years and values his autonomy. “When I’m bored, I will go downstairs and see my friend. I travel with my wheelchair everywhere,” he shared. This sentiment resonates with approximately 14 percent of Lions Befrienders’ beneficiaries, who also prefer to live independently.
Ms. Karen Wee, executive director of Lions Befrienders, noted that her organization is increasingly focused on fostering independence among older adults. “Agencies like ours are adapting to seniors’ growing preference for independence and freedom,” she stated. The organization provides activities, social groups, and regular check-ins to ensure seniors remain engaged with their communities. Notably, they have begun utilizing artificial intelligence to facilitate communication and match seniors with activities that align with their interests.
Innovative Approaches to Community Engagement
As the trend of seniors living alone continues to rise, other organizations such as Presbyterian Community Social Services (PCS) are also reimagining how to engage future generations of retirees. Chief Executive Officer Andrew Lim emphasized the need to create welcoming and inclusive spaces. “Many existing senior spaces may unintentionally deter participation,” he remarked. PCS aims to design environments that encourage seniors to engage actively, thereby addressing isolation.
Understanding the aspirations of seniors as they transition into retirement is crucial for effective community engagement. Mdm Sereena, who actively participates in free exercises, hobbies, and workshops, exemplifies how intentionality in spending time can lead to fulfilling experiences. “When you take part in activities, you end up making friends,” she noted, highlighting the importance of community connection.
As support systems evolve, the emphasis remains on empowering seniors to thrive in their independence while ensuring they remain connected to their communities. With tailored programs and innovative approaches, social service agencies are poised to meet the needs of Singapore’s growing population of seniors living alone, fostering both engagement and quality of life.
