Intuit Dome Secures Naming Rights for LA28 Olympics Basketball
The Intuit Dome will maintain its commercial name during the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, following a sponsorship agreement announced on Friday. This decision marks a significant milestone, as it allows the arena, which serves as the home for the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers, to be one of the first Olympic venues to retain its naming rights throughout the event.
Historical Sponsorship Milestone
The agreement positions the Intuit Dome alongside other venues like the Honda Center in Anaheim and the Comcast Squash Center at Universal Studios, both of which also retain their naming rights during the Olympic Games. This initiative is part of the broader strategy to achieve the LA28 organizing committee’s ambitious sponsorship goals, which aim to generate billions in revenue.
John Slusher, CEO of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Properties (USOPP), expressed enthusiasm about the deal, stating, “We’re super excited. Intuit Dome is arguably the best basketball arena in the world, and it will be great to be able to refer to it that way for every single basketball game.” Slusher emphasized the importance of maintaining the arena’s identity during a globally significant event like the Olympics.
Financial Implications for LA28
While Slusher did not disclose specific financial terms of the sponsorship, he noted that partnerships like Intuit’s are positioned within LA28’s highest-paying tier, alongside notable brands such as Honda, Google, Starbucks, Delta, and Comcast. The USOPP had previously projected that it could secure between $800 million and $1 billion in sponsorship agreements this year, with a total goal of exceeding $2 billion under contract.
Slusher acknowledged that while high-profile sponsorships can create a “crowded restaurant” effect, where the presence of established brands attracts others, each deal must have its own individual merit. He highlighted the need for careful evaluation of all partnerships to ensure they align with LA28’s objectives.
In addition to financial targets, LA28 is planning for a budget surplus, with a significant portion of the funds aimed at supporting youth sports initiatives. These efforts are particularly focused on expanding access to sports for children in underserved communities throughout Los Angeles.
The commitment to preserving the Intuit Dome’s name during such a high-profile event reflects a growing trend in sports and event sponsorship, where brands seek to enhance their visibility and association with major cultural moments. As the countdown to the 2028 Olympics continues, this partnership sets a precedent for future agreements and highlights the importance of corporate partnerships in funding large-scale events.
