Innovations Driving a Greener Future Explored in CNN’s Special
CNN’s latest episode of Tomorrow Transformed showcases innovative advancements aimed at creating a cleaner, more sustainable future. The program delves into transformative technologies across various sectors, highlighting efforts to make industries such as aviation and energy more environmentally friendly.
One of the focal points of this episode is the work being conducted at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, Australia. Recognized as a leading institution in photovoltaic technology, UNSW is home to Professor Martin Green, a pioneer known as the “father of solar energy.” His development of the PERC Cell design has become the foundation for over 90% of solar cells installed globally.
At UNSW, researchers are not just resting on their laurels. Professor Ned Ekins-Daukes and PhD student Jamie Harrison are exploring how thermodynamics can harness energy as heat escapes from the Earth’s surface into the cooler atmosphere. With solar energy now recognized as the cheapest form of energy available, these researchers are working to eliminate existing manufacturing bottlenecks.
The episode further highlights the efforts of Vince Allen, co-founder of the startup SunDrive. His team is innovating solar cell production by substituting expensive and scarce silver with copper, a material that is significantly more abundant and cost-effective. This change could revolutionize solar technology, making it more accessible and sustainable.
Transitioning to Cape Town, South Africa, the program features HYENA (Hydrogen Energy Applications), which is rethinking the potential of hydrogen as a reliable energy source for the African continent. Jack Fletcher, co-founder of HYENA, discusses their innovative “Power Pod” technology, which utilizes hydrogen to create a quieter and more efficient alternative to conventional diesel generators. By converting fuels like LPG into electricity through a chemical process rather than combustion, this technology significantly reduces emissions and noise pollution.
The program also showcases EcoCeres, a biofuels company based in Hong Kong, with operations in the southern region of Johor, Malaysia. As a global leader in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), EcoCeres is working towards a greener future for air travel through low-carbon jet fuel derived from renewable resources. The company’s biorefinery re-engineers waste oils from various sources, including food factories and palm oil mills, into eco-friendly jet fuel that meets the necessary standards for aviation.
At full capacity, EcoCeres’ biorefinery aims to produce 420,000 tonnes of fuel annually, supplying major airlines such as Cathay Pacific, Qantas, and British Airways. Matti Lievonen, CEO of EcoCeres, emphasizes that while the science behind converting waste into fuel is remarkable, the true innovation lies in the operational systems the company has developed. EcoCeres is actively expanding its influence across Southeast Asia and plans to replicate its successful model in other regions.
As the world looks towards a more sustainable future, innovations like those highlighted in Tomorrow Transformed underscore the potential for technology to reshape industries and reduce environmental impact. The next flight you take could very well be powered by recycled cooking oil from various sources, illustrating the profound changes taking place in energy and transportation.
