Dubai’s RTA Unveils Phase I of Hessa Street Upgrade Project
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has officially opened Phase I of the Hessa Street Development Project, a significant enhancement aimed at alleviating traffic congestion between Al Khail Road and Sheikh Zayed Road. The project spans a distance of 4.5 kilometers and includes the expansion of the roadway to four lanes in each direction, alongside the construction of new bridges at key intersections.
This development will facilitate smoother traffic flow for vehicles traveling between major highways and nearby communities. With 90% of the project now completed, the remaining enhancements, which consist of road improvements, intersection upgrades, and the addition of new cycling tracks, are anticipated to be finished by the second quarter of this year.
In a statement, Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, emphasized that the AED 690 million initiative aligns with Dubai’s commitment to expanding its road network in response to urban growth and a rising population. The project will cater to vital areas such as Al Sufouh 2, Al Barsha, and Jumeirah Village Circle, where the population is projected to exceed 640,000 residents by 2030.
Once fully operational, the Hessa Street upgrade is expected to double the road’s capacity from 8,000 to 16,000 vehicles per hour. This capacity increase aims to significantly reduce traffic delays and improve commuting times for residents.
In addition to addressing vehicular traffic, the project features a 13.5-kilometer cycling and e-scooter track that will connect Al Sufouh to Dubai Hills. The route will incorporate dedicated bridges over both Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, designed to integrate seamlessly with the surrounding environment and promote safer, more sustainable mobility options for users.
The completion of the Hessa Street Development Project reflects ongoing efforts by the RTA to enhance infrastructure in Dubai, ensuring that it meets the demands of a growing urban population while encouraging eco-friendly modes of transportation.
