Hong Kong Prioritizes Physical Health Amid Rising Stress Levels
A recent study by Cigna Healthcare reveals that respondents in Hong Kong place a high value on their physical health, even as stress levels increase. Conducted in May 2025, the Cigna Healthcare International Health Global Study 2025 surveyed over 11,000 respondents worldwide, including 1,000 individuals from Hong Kong. The findings underscore the urgency for holistic health approaches that address both physical and mental well-being.
Physical Health Takes Precedence
The study indicates that over half of the respondents in Hong Kong, specifically 54%, rank physical health as their top priority, significantly higher than the global average of 35%. Following physical health, financial and mental health were identified as the second and third most valued dimensions of well-being. Additionally, 36% of Hong Kong respondents reported maintaining a healthy weight and balanced diet, surpassing the global average of 33%. This suggests a strong culture of preventive health awareness among the population.
Cigna’s exploration of weight management revealed distinct preferences among Hong Kong residents. A notable 43% prioritize maintaining their current weight, compared to a global average of 36%. Conversely, only 36% aim to lose weight, marking the lowest percentage in the Asia-Pacific region and well below the global average of 46%. The report also found that 63% of respondents utilize regular exercise as their primary method for weight management, while 39% rely on diet plans or meal replacements. Less than 3% resort to medication, which is lower than the global average of 7%, indicating a preference for natural health strategies.
Increasing Stress and Job Satisfaction Concerns
Despite a focus on physical health, stress levels have surged among residents. The study found that 77% of respondents reported feeling stressed, up from 69% in the previous year. The leading sources of stress include uncertainty about the future (41%), personal finances (35%), and rising living costs (25%). These findings highlight the pressing need for accessible mental health support programs in the region.
Job satisfaction among employees in Hong Kong also lags behind the global average. Only 43% of respondents express satisfaction with their jobs, compared to 52% worldwide. Furthermore, just 35% are pleased with their employee benefits package, which falls short of the global average of 39%. This discrepancy points to an area ripe for improvement, as enhancing employee benefits could bolster workforce loyalty and overall performance.
Attitudes toward artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare show a more optimistic outlook in Hong Kong compared to global trends. Nearly 48% of respondents view AI integration positively, slightly above the 45% global average. The anticipated benefits include shorter wait times (44%), reduced administrative costs (40%), and improved support for healthcare providers (31%). This readiness for technology-driven health solutions aligns with ongoing discussions about digitalization within the city, indicating an opportunity for insurers and healthcare providers to innovate health services.
Jonathan Spiers, CEO of Cigna Healthcare Hong Kong, remarked, “The survey findings align with what we observe in the market. In Hong Kong, physical health remains a top priority, and rising stress levels highlight the importance of mental well-being. We also see growing confidence in the role of AI to enhance healthcare delivery.” He emphasized Cigna’s commitment to initiatives that promote vitality and a preventive approach to health.
