Bayern’s Luis Diaz Receives Three-Game Ban for Red Card Incident
Bayern Munich winger Luis Diaz has been handed a three-match ban by UEFA following his dismissal for serious foul play during the club’s 2-1 Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month. The incident occurred on November 1, 2023, when Diaz received a red card for a dangerous tackle on PSG’s Achraf Hakimi just before halftime.
Despite his two goals that led Bayern to a crucial win, Diaz’s actions overshadowed his performance. The tackle resulted in a severe ankle injury for Hakimi, who has not taken to the pitch since. Notably, the Moroccan defender was seen receiving the African Footballer of the Year award on November 29, 2023, appearing on stage with the aid of a scooter due to his injury.
Bayern’s manager, Vincent Kompany, initially anticipated that Diaz would miss only the upcoming match against Arsenal on December 6, 2023. However, following the official ruling, the Colombian international will also be sidelined for home fixtures against Sporting on December 9, 2023, and Union St Gilloise on January 21, 2024. Kompany expressed disappointment, stating, “My information is that he’s suspended for one game… I would be disappointed if my information is not correct,” during a press briefing on December 1, 2023.
Bayern Munich currently leads the Champions League standings with 12 points from four matches, maintaining a perfect record alongside Arsenal and Inter Milan. As the team prepares for their next game, they face the challenge of adapting their strategy without one of their key players, adding an extra layer of complexity to their campaign.
