Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has appealed to voters in Sabah to assess candidates based on their performance and qualifications rather than racial identities. During a public address on November 15, 2023, he emphasized the importance of selecting representatives who genuinely understand and address the needs of the community. Anwar’s comments come as the state gears up for the 17th Sabah State Election, set for November 29, with early voting scheduled for November 25.

In his address, Anwar urged voters to prioritize candidates with proven track records in tackling fundamental issues such as water, electricity, and education, particularly in rural regions. He highlighted the danger of making decisions out of anger or misguided racial sentiments, stating, “Do not act out of anger. Do not follow misguided racial sentiments that will not keep the country safe.” Anwar underscored the value of Malaysia’s multicultural harmony, which he believes is essential for attracting global investment.

“Remember, not many countries have all races—Malay, Chinese, Iban, Kadazan, Murut, Dayak, Bugis, Indian—who can sit together peacefully like this,” he added, as reported by the New Straits Times.

Record Participation in Upcoming Election

The upcoming election has attracted a record-breaking 596 candidates competing for 73 seats. Among the candidates are individuals from various political parties, including 74 independents, 73 from Parti Warisan, 72 from Parti Impian Sabah, and 55 from Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS). The Pakatan Harapan alliance, led by Anwar, has fielded 22 candidates.

More than 1.7 million Sabahans are eligible to vote in this election, which is anticipated to be competitive. Political analysts predict a series of multi-cornered contests across the state, with some constituencies featuring as many as 14 candidates. This election serves as a precursor to upcoming polls in Melaka, Johor, and Sarawak.

Anwar’s administration aims for the election to produce a state government that is aligned with the federal government in Putrajaya. Political leaders have noted that the collaboration among government partners is crucial for addressing Sabah’s entitlement to a 40 percent special grant.

Anwar’s Commitment to Sabahans

During his visit, Anwar defended his motives for being in the state, asserting that his focus is on safeguarding the rights and future of Sabahans rather than personal gain. He emphasized his long-standing commitment to the region, stating, “I have been a minister for more than 10 years, but I have never taken a single log from Sabah, I have not taken any contracts, and I have not taken any land. I come to look after the people, to carry out the trust.”

Also addressing the crowd was Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition. He noted that the alliance with Pakatan Harapan has provided significant strategic advantages in this election, especially in regions with non-Muslim and Chinese majorities. Zahid remarked, “When we collaborate with PH in areas with non-Muslim Bumiputera and Chinese voters, we find that they are more receptive.”

As the election approaches, Anwar’s call for unity and performance-based evaluations of candidates resonates with many voters who seek effective representation and solutions to local issues. The results of this election could shape the future political landscape in Sabah and beyond.
