Portugal’s Martinez Calls Ronaldo’s Red Card Against Ireland Unfair
Portugal manager Roberto Martinez criticized the decision to issue a red card to Cristiano Ronaldo during their 2-0 World Cup qualifying loss to Ireland in Dublin on March 23, 2024. This incident marked the first time Ronaldo has been sent off in his international career, spanning 226 appearances.
The forward was initially booked with a yellow card for an elbow to the back of Irish defender Dara O’Shea. However, following a VAR review, the card was upgraded to red, leading to significant discussion regarding the fairness of the decision.
“I thought it was a bit harsh because he cares about the team,” Martinez stated during a post-match press conference. He emphasized that Ronaldo had been under considerable physical pressure throughout the game, stating, “He was almost 60 minutes in the box being grabbed, pulled, pushed, and obviously he tries to get away from the defender.”
Martinez further explained his view on the incident, suggesting that the action appeared worse from the camera angle than it was in reality. “I don’t think it’s an elbow; I think it’s a full body,” he added, indicating that the incident was misinterpreted.
The manager also expressed concern over comments made by Ireland’s coach, Heimir Hallgrimsson, who suggested that Ronaldo had “controlled the referee” during their previous encounter in Lisbon, where Portugal won 1-0. Martinez remarked, “The only thing that leaves a bitter taste in my mouth is at the press conference yesterday, where the Ireland coach talked about the aspect of the referees being influenced, and then a big center half falls on the floor so dramatically at the turn of Cristiano’s body.”
Despite the defeat, Portugal remains in a strong position in Group F, sitting at the top with a two-point lead over Hungary and a superior goal difference. The Irish team is one point further back, keeping the competition tight.
Looking ahead, Portugal will host Armenia in their next match, while Ireland is set to travel to Hungary for the final round of fixtures on March 26, 2024. As the qualifying campaign approaches its conclusion, both teams will be eager to secure their places in the upcoming tournament.
