Parc des Princes Commemorates Victims of 2015 Attacks Before Qualifier
On November 13, 2023, the Parc des Princes in Paris observed a moment of reflection to honour the victims of the tragic November 13, 2015 attacks. This solemn tribute occurred before the World Cup qualifier match between the France and Ukraine national football teams, marking a significant moment on the tenth anniversary of the events that claimed 130 lives.
A Tribute to the Fallen
As players and fans gathered at the stadium, a minute’s silence was held in memory of those who lost their lives during the coordinated attacks perpetrated by members of the Islamic State. On that fateful night in 2015, gunmen and suicide bombers targeted various locations across Paris, including cafes, restaurants, and the Bataclan concert hall. The tragic events also included an attack near the Stade de France during a friendly match between France and Germany, where a suicide bomber detonated an explosive device, resulting in the death of one bystander.
In a poignant display of solidarity, the stadium’s giant screen showcased the motto of Paris, “Fluctuat nec mergitur,” which translates to “Tossed by the waves but never sinks.” This phrase encapsulates the resilience of the city and its people.
Fans Unite in Remembrance
During the 13th minute of the match, France supporters in the Boulogne stand participated in a coordinated tribute. They illuminated the stadium with the lights from their mobile phones, creating a sea of light in tribute to the victims. In a further display of national pride and remembrance, fans unfurled a tricolor display in blue, white, and red, followed by a rendition of the national anthem, “La Marseillaise.”
The atmosphere was one of unity as the crowd expressed their sentiments, chanting in defiance of the atrocities committed by the attackers. This heartfelt tribute served not only as a remembrance of the victims but also as a reaffirmation of the spirit and resilience of the French people.
As France faced Ukraine on this significant date, the memories of those lost served as a powerful reminder of the impact of terrorism and the importance of coming together as a community in solidarity.
