The Blast Slam IV finals marked a thrilling climax for Dota 2 fans at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on November 9, 2023. In an intense showdown, Tundra Esports emerged victorious against Team Falcons, securing the championship in a nail-biting best-of-five series. The event offered a total prize pool of US$1 million, drawing substantial interest from the esports community.

After three years since the last live competitive Dota 2 match, expectations were high as attendees filled the stadium. While the venue was not at full capacity, with approximately three-quarters of the seats occupied, the energy was palpable. Fans were treated to an electrifying atmosphere reminiscent of the 2022 The International 11, which had also taken place at this iconic location.

Fan Experience and Tournament Dynamics

Among the attendees was Ryan Yeo, who expressed excitement about experiencing his first Dota 2 final in person. “I usually prefer to watch online because you can slow down and watch things, but I have not attended one so far, so why not this time?” he said. Dressed as Zeus, a character from the game, Yeo was joined by friends in similar costumes, enhancing the event’s immersive experience.

Another couple, known as Daryl and Benita, shared their enthusiasm for the tournament, citing their decade-long involvement with Dota 2. “We watch most of the tournaments, and we also watched TI in Singapore before,” Daryl noted. Their support for Tundra Esports added to the passionate atmosphere among fans.

The Blast Slam IV was organized by Blast, a Danish esports company known for high-caliber events, including Counter-Strike tournaments. This year’s event marked a significant step into the Dota 2 scene, as part of a multi-year collaboration with the Singapore Tourism Board to promote regular esports events in the region.

Production Quality and Attendance Insights

The production quality of the event impressed attendees, with state-of-the-art graphics and smooth match flow contributing to a captivating viewing experience. Yet, despite the high standards, attendance was around 5,000, significantly lower than expected. Bryan Huang from GosuGamers commented on the turnout, noting that concurrent tournaments, including the League of Legends Worlds Grand Finals and the Intel Extreme Masters in Chengdu, likely affected audience numbers. Furthermore, he mentioned that the absence of Chinese teams and higher travel costs in Singapore may have deterred some regional fans.

In terms of viewership, the event attracted more than 21.9 million views online, showcasing the global appeal of Dota 2. Former professional player Daryl “iceiceice” Koh highlighted the need for more promotional efforts, stating, “It’s such a pity for people to not be able to experience a live gaming event.”

The finals unfolded with palpable tension as Tundra Esports and Team Falcons clashed in a fiercely contested series. Ultimately, Tundra secured the championship with a final score of 3-2, winning US$300,000 while Team Falcons walked away with US$150,000. This victory was particularly significant as Team Falcons were recent winners of The International, adding to the drama of the match.

Looking ahead, both teams are set to compete again at Blast Slam V, scheduled to take place in Chengdu, China, from November 25 to December 7, 2023. While the Blast Slam IV delivered an exciting event, some fans noted areas for improvement, such as the absence of merchandise and cosplay activities, which could enhance the overall experience.

In summary, the Blast Slam IV finals not only showcased top-tier competitive gameplay but also highlighted the vibrant community surrounding Dota 2. Despite a smaller audience than anticipated, the event proved to be a memorable occasion for fans and players alike, reaffirming the ongoing popularity of esports in the region.
