ACEN Australia’s Stubbo Solar Project Achieves Full Operation

ACEN Australia’s Stubbo Solar project has officially reached full commercial operation, becoming the first solar generator backed by a Long-Term Energy Service Agreement (LTESA) in New South Wales. This significant milestone, announced on November 10, 2025, marks an important step in the state’s transition to clean energy. The project, which represents an investment of approximately AUS $760 million, has a capacity of 520 MWdc (400 MWac) and stands as one of the largest solar initiatives in Australia.

The milestone was celebrated during an onsite ceremony attended by Penny Sharpe, the New South Wales Minister for Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Heritage, alongside notable figures from ACEN Australia including President and CEO Cezar “Bong” Consing, Executive Chairman Jose Maria Zabaleta, and Managing Director David Pollington.

Significance in the Clean Energy Landscape

“Stubbo Solar reinforces ACEN’s long-term commitment to Australia’s clean energy future,” stated Jose Maria Zabaleta. He emphasized that this achievement illustrates how clear policy and strong partnerships can facilitate large-scale renewable investments. The project is particularly notable as it was developed before the establishment of the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ), bridging two distinct policy eras.

The path to this achievement began several years ago, long before the current frameworks that govern renewable energy in Australia were established. According to David Pollington, what began as a single-site concept has evolved into a major renewable energy investment for the region, driven by collaboration and strategic adaptability. He highlighted the necessity of ongoing partnerships between government and industry to navigate the changing market dynamics effectively.

Investment and Community Impact

ACEN Australia’s investment of nearly AUS $85 million into the New South Wales economy during construction included AUS $60 million in contracts and procurement for local businesses. The project also directed AUS $3.2 million to First Nations enterprises and over AUS $400,000 to community initiatives through its voluntary Social Investment Program. This program aims to enhance education, skills, and overall community well-being.

Located approximately 10 kilometers north of Gulgong, Stubbo Solar is capable of generating enough clean electricity to power around 185,000 Australian households. The project also features plans for a 200 MW / 800 MWh battery energy storage system, ensuring reliable clean energy as the electrical grid transitions towards decarbonization.

Additionally, Stubbo Solar has made strides in sustainability by becoming the first large-scale solar project certified for full circularity under the Circular PV Alliance framework. This certification guarantees that all 930,000 solar panels will be reused or recycled at the end of their lifecycle, setting a new standard for sustainability within the industry.
