Bengal Opposition Leader Challenges CM Over Swimmer’s Award Claims

In a recent exchange of accusations, Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, has publicly challenged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding her claims about swimmer Bula Choudhury and the prestigious Arjuna Award. During a felicitation event on November 8, 2023, for Indian cricketer Richa Ghosh, Banerjee stated that Choudhury had approached her for the award when she served as Union Minister for Sports.

Accusations and Historical Context

Adhikari contended that Banerjee’s assertions were “untrue,” pointing out that Choudhury received the Arjuna Award in 1990, a time when Banerjee was not a Member of Parliament. He highlighted that Banerjee lost her seat in the 1989 Lok Sabha elections and did not return to Parliament until the following elections in 1991. “How could Bula Choudhury request her for the Arjuna Award in 1991?” Adhikari questioned in a statement on social media platform X, emphasizing the timeline to refute the Chief Minister’s claims.

Historical records confirm Adhikari’s statement. Banerjee first won a Lok Sabha seat in 1984 but lost in 1989. It wasn’t until her victory in 1991 that she re-entered Parliament, subsequently serving as a Union minister under former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao.

Choudhury’s Accomplishments and Banerjee’s Remarks

Adhikari criticized Banerjee’s remarks regarding Choudhury’s accomplishments as a swimmer, stating that the Chief Minister’s comments undermine her achievements. He noted that Choudhury earned the Arjuna Award after successfully swimming the English Channel, an accomplishment that stands on its own merit. “Bula Choudhury earned the Arjuna Award entirely on her own merits as an international swimmer and not at the mercy of anyone,” he stated.

Banerjee’s comments included a claim that she advised Choudhury to excel in the Commonwealth Games, which Adhikari rebutted by stating that Choudhury had not participated in the Commonwealth Games after 1982. He demanded that Banerjee apologize to Choudhury for her inaccurate statements, emphasizing the need to respect the swimmer’s legacy.

As of now, the Trinamool Congress, Banerjee’s political party, has not issued a response to Adhikari’s allegations. The ongoing political discourse reflects the contentious atmosphere leading up to future electoral contests in West Bengal.
