The inaugural large-scale exhibition titled “Hong Kong Art Toy Story 2025@Kuala Lumpur” has officially opened at TRX The Exchange in Kuala Lumpur. This significant event showcases over 450 original art toys created by twelve renowned Hong Kong designers, celebrating the unique and vibrant culture of art toys from the region. The exhibition runs from November 7 to 16, 2025.

The opening ceremony took place on November 8, officiated by notable figures including Ms. Christine Chie, the Head of the Architecture, Printing & Publishing and Promotion at the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDA), and Ms. Cherrie Chong, President of the Innovative Entrepreneur Association (IEA). They were joined by Mr. Johnson Chiang, the exhibition’s curator, along with the exhibiting designers, which include notable names such as b.wing, Felix Ip, and Steven Choi.

This exhibition marks a pivotal moment for the art toy industry in Malaysia and the broader ASEAN region. It immerses visitors in the creative landscape of Hong Kong’s art toys, featuring both established and emerging designers. The collection includes museum-grade pieces and auction-worthy artworks, capturing the evolution of this unique art form.

Innovative Cross-Sectoral Creations

One of the exhibition’s highlights is the introduction of brand-new cross-sectoral art toys. Six of the featured designers have created original pieces inspired by six Hong Kong intangible cultural heritage items, including Tai Chi Chuan and Herbal Tea. This initiative showcases the potential for creative fusion between traditional practices and contemporary design.

The exhibition is organized into distinct zones that reflect the diverse eras and styles within the art toy movement. Visitors will encounter a curated timeline that traces the history of Hong Kong’s art toys since the 1990s, featuring iconic collector’s items. Some of these pieces are not only collectible but also represent significant milestones in the art toy movement.

An interactive augmented reality (AR) photography area adds an engaging layer to the experience, allowing visitors to connect the virtual and real worlds. Additionally, larger-than-life installations, including giant toy boxes and life-size figurines, provide an immersive environment for attendees.

Engaging Experiences and Future Collaborations

In addition to the exhibition, special events will be held on weekends, providing art toy enthusiasts with the opportunity to meet the designers. These events will include live discussions, autograph signings, and hands-on demonstrations, offering unique insights into the artists’ creative processes.

“The art toy industry has seen tremendous growth in ASEAN countries,” stated Ms. Cherrie Chong. “Since our first overseas showcase in Bangkok in 2022, we are thrilled to bring twelve exceptional designers to Kuala Lumpur, enhancing the understanding and appreciation of creative industries between our regions.”

The exhibition is made possible through the sponsorship of the CCIDA and the support of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Jakarta. It serves as a tribute to Hong Kong’s rich art toy culture, allowing visitors to explore a realm where creativity and craftsmanship converge.

Mr. Johnson Chiang emphasized the significance of the event, noting, “Hong Kong has produced numerous talented illustrators and designers. This exhibition represents a valuable opportunity for different generations of Hong Kong’s art toy creators to showcase their work internationally.”

The Hong Kong Art Toy Story 2025@Kuala Lumpur promises to be a memorable experience for art lovers, collectors, and the general public, highlighting both the creativity and cultural heritage of Hong Kong’s art toy scene.
