Warner Bros Revives Gremlins Franchise with Third Film for 2027
Warner Bros has officially announced the revival of its iconic *Gremlins* franchise with the upcoming release of *Gremlins 3*. Scheduled to hit cinemas on November 19, 2027, this marks the first live-action sequel in nearly four decades, generating excitement among fans of the original films. The announcement was made during an investor call by Warner Bros Discovery CEO and President David Zaslav on November 6.
Director and producer Chris Columbus, who initially contributed to the series as a writer for the original *Gremlins*, will return to the helm for this third installment. Steven Spielberg, the legendary filmmaker, will serve as executive producer, ensuring a strong connection to the franchise’s roots. Columbus will collaborate with co-writers Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein on the new script.
While no details regarding the plot or casting have been released, the film is being developed under the banner of Amblin Entertainment, with Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario producing, alongside Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe from 26th Street Pictures.
The original *Gremlins*, directed by Joe Dante and released in 1984, introduced audiences to the chaos that ensued when a young man named Billy Peltzer received a mysterious creature called a Mogwai. The film’s combination of humor and horror made it a box office success, grossing over US$212 million worldwide. It also played a significant role in the creation of the PG-13 rating in the United States. The sequel, *Gremlins 2: The New Batch*, released in 1990, earned US$41 million and has since gained a cult following.
In discussing the significance of the new film, Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros Pictures’ President of Development and Production, expressed enthusiasm for reviving a cherished title. “Few titles are as beloved and iconic as *Gremlins*, and we’re beyond excited to bring it back for both lifelong fans and a whole new generation,” he stated. Ehrman emphasized the privilege of collaborating with industry heavyweights like Spielberg and Columbus, promising audiences a fresh experience filled with the franchise’s signature magic and mayhem.
The timing of this announcement coincides with Zaslav’s remarks about Warner Bros’ strong performance at the box office in 2025. He noted the studio’s leadership in both domestic and international box office revenues, stating, “Not only are we in first place, but we’re the only film studio to have crossed US$4 billion in 2025 box office revenue thus far, and we’ve done it with a significant amount of original stories.”
As anticipation builds for *Gremlins 3*, audiences are left eagerly awaiting further details about this beloved franchise’s new chapter and how it will resonate with both old and new fans alike.
