Louis Rees-Zammit Cleared to Play for Wales Against Argentina
Wales winger Louis Rees-Zammit has been declared fit to play in the upcoming match against Argentina on October 29, 2023. This announcement was made by assistant coach Danny Wilson during a press conference on Wednesday. Rees-Zammit had recently returned to rugby after spending two years in the United States attempting to break into the NFL.
His fitness had been a point of concern as Wales prepares for a four-match programme this month. Wilson confirmed, “Yes, he’s fit for selection. We are quite fortunate at the moment this squad is fit and healthy. The likes of him and some of the other names available give us a challenge to select the team.”
The final team selection will be announced by the new head coach Steve Tandy on Friday, with Rees-Zammit expected to be included for the match at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium. Wilson noted, “There are a few boxes to tick, but he’s moving in the right direction,” indicating that Rees-Zammit is progressing well in his recovery.
Rees-Zammit expressed his excitement about returning to rugby, stating that it felt “amazing” to be back after his time in American football. He had accumulated 32 caps for Wales and played for the British & Irish Lions in 2021. During his stint in the NFL, he trained with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Jacksonville Jaguars, although he did not participate in any competitive games before signing with the Bristol Bears in August.
Reflecting on his journey, he shared, “I went out there (to the U.S.) and tried it out, but I am really happy to be back.” His return to rugby has been met with optimism from both the coaching staff and fans, who are eager to see how his experience in American football translates on the rugby field.
As Wales gears up for this important fixture, the inclusion of Rees-Zammit could provide a significant boost to the team’s attacking options. The anticipation is building for what promises to be an exciting encounter come Sunday.
