Taiwan Achieves 10th Place in Global Digital Competitiveness Ranking

Taiwan has secured the 10th position in the latest World Digital Competitiveness Ranking, released by the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) based in Switzerland. This ranking evaluates the ability of 69 economies to adapt to and benefit from digital transformation, assessing three core areas: “knowledge,” “technology,” and “future readiness.”

Key Rankings and Performance Insights

Taiwan’s performance in the ranking highlights its strengths and areas for improvement. The nation excelled in the category of future readiness, climbing three spots to achieve third place globally. In technology, Taiwan fell four positions to 11th, while it moved up three places to 16th in knowledge.

Notably, Taiwan placed first in the world for “IT and media stock market capitalization,” a significant indicator within the technology factor. Furthermore, it ranked second for both “total R&D personnel per capita” and “total expenditure on R&D” as a percentage of GDP, both critical components of the knowledge factor.

The country also demonstrated strength in future readiness, ranking second in the “agility of companies” category. Additionally, Taiwan placed third in “higher education attainment” and “educational assessment PISA-math,” which is part of the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment.

Government Response and Future Directions

In response to the ranking, the Ministry of Digital Affairs in Taipei indicated that these results reflect a robust foundation for Taiwan’s artificial intelligence (AI) industry and overall digital transformation. The ministry emphasized that Taiwan’s advancements in future readiness underscore the competitiveness of local enterprises and highlight the government’s successful public-private collaboration and commitment to data privacy protection.

To further enhance its digital landscape, the ministry announced plans to collaborate with various agencies on refining laws and issuing guidelines aimed at improving AI governance. This initiative aims to enhance Taiwan’s international visibility in digital policy and innovation.

The IMD report also noted that the top three nations in digital competitiveness were Switzerland, followed by the United States in second place and Singapore in third. Taiwan’s position within the top tier of digitally savvy nations underscores its significant progress in adapting to the rapidly evolving digital economy.
