On Sunday, Taiwanese badminton duo Wang Chi-lin and Chiu Hsiang-chieh secured the men’s doubles title at the Hylo Open in Germany, marking their most significant achievement of the year. The pair, currently ranked 21st in the world, triumphed over Indonesia’s world No. 11 team, comprising Sabar Karyaman Gutama and Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani, with a competitive score of 21-19, 21-18.

This victory represents their first championship in a Super 500 tournament or higher this season. Earlier in the year, Wang and Chiu had won the Super 300-level Taipei Open, but they had struggled in subsequent competitions, failing to advance beyond the round-of-16 in several events. Their partnership, which began in late August 2022, saw them finish in third place in two Super 500 tournaments during their initial months together.

Path to Victory

After the match, Wang expressed admiration for Chiu’s progress since they teamed up. “It must be tough for him to adjust to the intensity at this level,” Wang noted, highlighting Chiu’s improvement and adaptation to a more aggressive playing style. Wang previously partnered with Lee Yang, with whom he won back-to-back Olympic gold medals in Tokyo and Paris. Following the Paris Games, Lee semi-retired and officially retired after the World Tour Finals last year.

Wang described the victory at the Hylo Open as “just the beginning,” acknowledging that several top players from countries like Japan, South Korea, and China were absent from this tournament. The win has revitalized the pair’s season, providing a much-needed boost ahead of upcoming competitions.

Health Concerns

Despite the success, Wang revealed that he has been experiencing tightness and pain in his right shoulder during matches. He plans to return to Taiwan for a medical check-up to address these ongoing issues. As the badminton season progresses, both players are hopeful that this title will lead to further successes and help solidify their partnership on the international stage.

The Hylo Open victory not only enhances their rankings but also serves as a testament to their hard work and dedication in the face of challenges. Fans and supporters will certainly be watching closely as Wang and Chiu aim for continued success in future tournaments.
