											A fitness center in Binzhou, located in Shandong Province, northern China, has initiated a controversial weight loss competition, offering a Porsche Panamera as the grand prize. Participants are required to pay an entrance fee of $1,400, with the winner set to receive a vehicle valued at approximately $150,000. The challenge demands that individuals lose 50 kg (110 lbs) within a three-month period.
The gym confirmed that the competition is currently active, stating, “Registration will close once we reach 30 participants. So far, about seven or eight people have signed up.” It is important to note that the prize will be a used 2020 Porsche owned by the gym’s proprietor, rather than a brand-new model. The entrance fee includes meals and accommodation for participants, yet details regarding the training program and weight loss assessment criteria remain undisclosed.
Concerns have been raised regarding the health implications of such rapid weight loss. Dr. Zeng, a prominent medical blogger in China, cautioned against the risks associated with losing weight too quickly. He stated, “Losing 0.5 kg per day is far too fast. Unless someone is severely overweight, this pace results in muscle loss rather than fat loss. A safer target is about 0.5 kg per week.”
Despite these warnings, the contest has generated significant interest online. Many social media users have expressed a mix of curiosity and skepticism about the extreme nature of the challenge and the substantial reward. Some view the competition as an innovative marketing strategy, while others question the ethical implications and potential health hazards tied to such rapid weight loss contests.
