Hong Kong Court Sentences Trio to Long Terms for Bomb Plot

A Hong Kong judge has sentenced three men to lengthy prison terms for their roles in a plot to carry out bomb attacks aimed at pressuring the local government to close its borders during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. The sentencing took place on October 27, 2023, following their conviction for conspiracy to cause an explosion.

The trio, identified as Lukas Ho, Lee Ka-pan, and Cheung Ka-Chun, were found guilty of involvement in two separate incidents. In January 2020, a homemade bomb exploded in a hospital toilet, and in February, explosive devices were discovered at a railway station. Fortunately, neither incident resulted in casualties.

Sentencing Outcomes and Judicial Remarks

During the sentencing, Judge Johnny Chan imposed an 18-year prison term on Lukas Ho, expressing concern over his lack of remorse and “inflated ego,” which he deemed a significant threat to public safety. His co-defendants received sentences of 16 years and eight months each. The three men displayed little emotion as they were led away by guards, even smiling at friends and family in the courtroom.

The court heard that the group was also linked to a third bomb plot, which prosecutors claimed could have led to an “indiscriminate attack” had it not been intercepted by police. This plot was intended to force authorities to shut Hong Kong’s borders amid rising COVID-19 cases in neighboring mainland China.

Context of the Case

The bombings were part of a broader strategy to compel the government to take drastic action in response to the pandemic. The jury acquitted five other individuals involved in the same case last month, highlighting the complexities surrounding the legal proceedings.
