Verstappen Denies ‘Lost Interest’ Claim Amid Strong Comeback
Max Verstappen has firmly rebutted comments suggesting he had “lost interest” during a challenging period for Red Bull Racing earlier this season. The reigning Formula One champion made these remarks on Thursday at the Mexican Grand Prix, responding to statements made by Red Bull motorsport consultant Helmut Marko. Marko, a significant figure in Verstappen’s career, indicated that the Dutch driver had seemed less engaged when the team’s performance was lacking.
Speaking to Sky Sports during the recent race weekend in Texas, Marko noted, “Max at one stage when we were not competitive, I would say he lost a little bit of interest.” This comment came after Verstappen’s impressive performance, where he secured victories in both the sprint and main race.
As of late August, Verstappen found himself trailing McLaren’s Oscar Piastri by a substantial margin of **104 points**. However, he has since made a remarkable comeback, winning three out of the last four races. Following these victories, he has reduced the gap to **40 points** with five races remaining in the season, positioning himself back in contention for a fifth consecutive championship title.
Verstappen acknowledged the change in his racing experience, stating, “Of course it’s more enjoyable coming to the race weekends like this than knowing that you don’t have a chance to win.” He emphasized that he consistently strives to maximize his performance, regardless of his position in the race. “Even if I’m fighting for fourth or even ninth, I will always try to get the best out of it,” he added.
The Dutch driver has also shown a keen interest in sportscar racing, recently competing in the GT3 category at the Nuerburgring, where he achieved victory. Marko suggested that these activities were encouraged to keep Verstappen in good spirits, remarking, “Now that the car is working, and his success at the Nurburgring, I would say two tenths just came from him because he’s really motivated.”
In response, Verstappen clarified that his participation in the Nuerburgring race had been planned well in advance. He noted that he has been actively competing online during the F1 season for several years. “There’s nothing really that has changed in terms of how professional I approach my race weekends,” he stated.
Verstappen attributed the recent improvements in the car’s performance to a combination of factors, including significant upgrades that allowed for a different configuration. He described the sensitivity of modern racing cars, stating, “These cars are super-sensitive, right? So you’re sliding a bit less, the tyres also work a bit better and that gives you also better race pace.”
The synergy of these elements has contributed to unlocking additional pace within the car, boosting his confidence and enabling a more aggressive setup. As the season progresses, Verstappen’s determination and adaptability position him as a formidable contender in the championship race.
