Tan Tock Seng Hospital Responds to Patient’s Allegations of Mistreatment
Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Singapore has publicly defended its clinical team after a patient alleged mistreatment during her stay at the facility. The hospital released a statement on October 21, 2023, addressing accusations made by the woman, who claims to have been forcibly restrained and injected with an unknown substance on October 10.
The patient, who took to Facebook to share her experience, alleged that she was not permitted to contact her husband during her hospitalization and was later transferred to the Institute of Mental Health against her will. She described a distressing encounter involving a group of approximately ten individuals, including hospital staff and auxiliary police officers.
Hospital’s Response to Allegations
In its Facebook post, Tan Tock Seng Hospital stated, “We are aware of recent online posts by a patient alleging that her treatment at our hospital was insensitive and inappropriate. We take the allegations seriously.” The hospital emphasized that the clinical team’s actions were motivated by a commitment to ensure the safety and well-being of the patient.
The hospital insisted that its team acted swiftly and responsibly, expressing genuine concern for the patient’s welfare. “Incidents such as the one involving the patient can be misunderstood when taken out of their full context,” the statement continued. The hospital voiced apprehension regarding the portrayal of events and the naming of a staff member in the patient’s online posts.
Details of the Incident
Following the incident, the patient filed a police report on October 18, 2023. In the report, she accused hospital employees and auxiliary police officers of inhumane treatment, unlawful restraint, and violation of her rights as a patient. The report specifically mentioned one doctor by name.
Tan Tock Seng Hospital expressed its commitment to professionalism, compassion, and integrity among its healthcare workers. “We will not tolerate harassment or false accusations directed at them,” the hospital stated, adding that it is currently in contact with the patient and her family.
In response to inquiries from CNA, the police confirmed that they had received a report regarding the matter. The hospital has not provided additional details about the incident, maintaining that it is a sensitive situation.
The case has sparked discussions on social media platforms, with many expressing concern over patient rights and the treatment of individuals in healthcare settings. As the situation evolves, both the hospital and the patient’s family are navigating the complexities surrounding the allegations.
