China Eastern Airlines to Restart Shanghai-Delhi Flights on Nov 9
State-owned China Eastern Airlines has announced the resumption of its flights between Shanghai and Delhi, effective from November 9, 2023. This move marks a significant step as direct air links between China and India are reinstated following a five-year hiatus caused by diplomatic tensions.
According to the airline’s official website, the flights will operate three times a week on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. This development comes on the heels of improved diplomatic relations between the two nations, following Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s recent visit to China. The visit was the first by an Indian leader in over seven years and coincided with a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, where trade relations were a focal point of discussion.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs confirmed earlier this month that commercial flights between the neighboring countries would resume. This announcement was welcomed by both nations as a sign of thawing relations, which had been strained since direct air links were suspended in 2020. The suspension was a direct consequence of deadly clashes along their Himalayan border, leading to a prolonged military standoff.
While China Eastern Airlines did not respond to inquiries regarding the flight resumption, the announcement has generated interest among travelers. Additionally, India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has recently announced it will commence daily non-stop flights between Kolkata and Guangzhou. The state-backed Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport expressed support for the opening of more direct routes, further enhancing connectivity between the two countries.
Both India’s and China’s foreign ministries have yet to comment specifically on the resumption of the Shanghai-Delhi flights. Nevertheless, the initiative is anticipated to bolster trade and tourism, which have been adversely affected during the years of suspended air travel.
As these developments unfold, the resumption of flights not only signifies a return to normalcy but also highlights the potential for renewed economic collaboration between the two populous nations. The aviation sector stands to benefit, providing both countries with an opportunity to enhance their bilateral ties.
