Pakistan Launches Major Counteroffensive, Captures 19 Afghan Posts
Pakistani security forces have asserted control over 19 border posts in a decisive counteroffensive following heavy shelling from Afghanistan on October 7, 2023. The operation was initiated after the Afghan Taliban launched unprovoked attacks along multiple sectors of the border, prompting a robust military response from Pakistan.
According to security sources, the counterattack began overnight. Pakistani forces engaged in a comprehensive operation utilizing artillery, tanks, and an array of light and heavy weaponry. Air and drone strikes targeted positions of alleged militants, including those associated with the Khawarij and ISIS near the border. The operation has been characterized as a significant success for Pakistan’s border forces, marking a strong retaliation against perceived threats.
The Afghan forces reportedly faced substantial losses during the skirmishes, with many posts being destroyed or abandoned. Security officials indicated that Afghan soldiers and Taliban fighters fled the scene, leaving behind casualties and damaged equipment. The scale of the Pakistani military response appeared to demoralize Afghan troops, leading to requests from Afghan officials for Pakistan to cease its counteroffensive.
Regional Reactions to the Escalation
In light of the escalating tensions, Saudi Arabia expressed deep concern over the border clashes. The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs called for both Pakistan and Afghanistan to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue to alleviate rising tensions. The Kingdom reiterated its support for regional and international efforts aimed at promoting peace and stability for both nations.
Similarly, Qatar has voiced its apprehension regarding the conflict, urging both sides to resolve their issues through diplomatic channels. The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the importance of reducing tensions for regional security and stability, warning that ongoing conflict could have detrimental effects on the broader area. Qatar reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that foster lasting peace and prosperity for the peoples of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The recent military actions have raised concerns not only for the immediate region but also for broader international stability. The situation remains fluid, with the potential for further developments as both nations navigate their complex relationship.
