Thousands Celebrate Ricky Hatton’s Life in Manchester Farewell

Former world welterweight champion Ricky Hatton was laid to rest in Manchester on September 14, 2023, drawing thousands of mourners who came to pay tribute to one of the city’s most cherished sports icons. Hatton, affectionately known as “the Hitman,” was found dead at the age of 46, prompting an outpouring of grief from fans and fellow athletes alike.
The funeral procession commenced from The Cheshire Cheese pub, a favorite haunt of Hatton’s, and made its way to Manchester Cathedral. Mourners lined the streets, many proudly waving Manchester City flags and chanting, “There’s only one Ricky Hatton!” as the cortege journeyed through the city.
A Personal Touch and Legacy Remembered
Hatton’s casket, a sky blue adorned with the phrase “Blue Moon,” reflected both his famous entrance song and his lifelong devotion to Manchester City. Throughout his career, he often donned blue shorts, showcasing his allegiance to the football club.
Olympic boxing silver medallist Amir Khan, who flew in from Dubai to attend the funeral, spoke to the BBC at the cathedral, expressing the collective sense of loss within the boxing community. “It’s a tough time for us all, losing a legend in the sport of boxing. It’s just remembering him and being here, showing our respects,” Khan noted. “A massive legacy, he was a fighter that we all looked up to.”
The former champion had an illustrious professional career spanning 15 years, during which he captured multiple titles including the WBA, IBO, and IBF light-welterweight titles, as well as the WBA welterweight world championship. He retired in 2012, but there were plans for a comeback event in Dubai later this year.
A Community United in Grief
The overwhelming turnout at Hatton’s funeral highlighted the impact he had on both the boxing world and the local community. His death has left a void that resonates deeply among fans and fellow boxers.
As tributes continue to pour in, it is clear that Ricky Hatton’s legacy will endure, not just in the ring but in the hearts of those who admired him. His achievements and the joy he brought to countless fans will be remembered as a significant part of Manchester’s sporting history.
