Matt Renshaw Named in Australia’s ODI Squad for India Series

Former test opener Matt Renshaw is on the verge of making his long-anticipated one-day international debut after being selected for Australia’s squad for the upcoming home series against India. The 29-year-old left-handed batsman last played for Australia in a test match against India in New Delhi nearly three years ago. His inclusion in the squad, announced on Tuesday, comes after an impressive performance for Australia ‘A’ against Sri Lanka ‘A’ in July.
Renshaw is one of four new additions to the 15-man squad, which will be captained by Mitchell Marsh. He joins fast bowler Mitchell Starc and all-rounders Matt Short and Mitchell Owen in a lineup that is undergoing significant changes. With the recent retirements of notable players such as Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis from ODI cricket, Renshaw and the power-hitting Owen could play crucial roles in reshaping Australia’s middle order ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
Starc’s selection marks his return to international cricket this summer, having rested during the tour of South Africa. Australia will kick off the three-match ODI series against India on October 19, 2023, in Perth, followed by a five-match T20 series.
Squad Details and Upcoming Matches
In the absence of injured fast bowler Pat Cummins, Mitchell Marsh will continue to lead the ODI side. Cummins is currently recovering from a back injury as he prepares for the home Ashes series. The selectors also announced a 14-man squad for the first two T20 matches, which will be held in Canberra on October 29 and in Melbourne on October 31.
Wicketkeeper Alex Carey, who played a pivotal role in the recent T20 series win against New Zealand, has been included in the ODI squad but will miss the series opener to participate in domestic red-ball cricket in the Sheffield Shield. In his stead, Josh Inglis will step in as the wicketkeeper after recovering from a calf strain.
The complete Australian ODI squad for the series against India includes:
– Mitchell Marsh (captain)
