Global Protests Embrace ‘One Piece’ Symbol for Change

Protests around the world are increasingly featuring a new symbol of resistance: the skull and crossbones flag from the popular Japanese manga, One Piece. This emblem, adorned with a straw hat, embodies the quest for justice and change among Generation Z. Over recent months, demonstrators in countries such as Indonesia, Nepal, the Philippines, Madagascar, and Morocco have adopted this imagery during protests, showcasing a global youth movement driven by discontent and a desire for reform.
The flag belongs to Monkey D. Luffy, the main character in Eiichirō Oda’s One Piece, which first launched in 1997. The manga narrates Luffy’s adventures as he seeks the mythical “One Piece” treasure, striving to become the king of the pirates. With over 500 million copies sold worldwide and translations in 40 languages, the series has transcended its origins, becoming a cultural touchstone for young people globally.
In Morocco, the GenZ 212 movement has adopted Luffy’s flag to express their grievances over social justice, healthcare, and educational reforms. Younès (a pseudonym), a participant in this movement, explains, “There are lots of critiques in One Piece of the elite, of governments, of lies.” His sentiments reflect a broader resonance with the manga’s themes among youth protesters, who view Luffy as a symbol of defiance against oppression.
The adoption of this flag is not limited to Morocco. In Madagascar, activists have used Luffy’s image on social media platforms to show solidarity with local movements. During protests in France on September 10, demonstrators were seen carrying posters featuring the iconic flag. The movement has garnered international attention, with various issues being addressed by protesters depending on their local contexts.
In Nepal, protests have focused on issues such as the so-called “nepo kids,” while in Indonesia, activists have rallied against privileges enjoyed by politicians. Romi Ghimire, a lecturer and human rights advocate in Nepal, observes that although common themes emerge across these global protests, local issues also play a significant role. For instance, in Morocco, demonstrators expressed outrage over government spending on sports facilities amidst severe shortcomings in healthcare and education, highlighted by recent tragedies including the deaths of women in childbirth.
Faly (a pseudonym), a medical student from Madagascar, shared his view on how the narrative of One Piece resonates with his personal experiences. He remarked that the story’s depiction of rebellion against established power structures is compelling and relevant to today’s struggles for justice. For many young people, the manga serves as more than just entertainment; it acts as a motivational force that encourages them to question authority and demand accountability.
The emergence of the One Piece flag as a symbol of protest illustrates how cultural phenomena can inspire political action. As this unique movement continues to unfold, it highlights the interconnectedness of youth activism across borders, united under common aspirations for a better future. The flag of Luffy is more than an emblem; it represents a generation determined to challenge the status quo and fight for their rights.
In a world increasingly characterized by disillusionment with traditional power structures, the One Piece flag epitomizes the voice of a new generation. As protests continue to rise, it remains to be seen how these diverse movements will influence the political landscape on a global scale.
