Australia all-rounder Cameron Green is optimistic about entering the upcoming Ashes series without any bowling restrictions. Green, who underwent spinal surgery in October 2022 after experiencing his fifth stress fracture in his back, is set to make his return to bowling during Western Australia’s Sheffield Shield opener against New South Wales at the WACA, starting on Saturday.

“It’s been a long 12 months, but I’m feeling really good,” Green stated in a press conference on Friday. He emphasized that his recovery process has been positive, saying, “The body’s in a good place. It’s been a really good rehab journey. I feel stronger, fitter. My action feels good.”

The first test of the Ashes series against England is scheduled to begin on November 21, 2023, in Perth. Green is confident that he will be ready for the challenge, noting, “The first test should be no restrictions. That’s kind of the whole plan of the last year — to peak for the Ashes.”

Green has not bowled in a competitive match since his surgery but aims to bowl around eight overs against New South Wales as he gradually increases his workload. The 26-year-old has been batting at number three since returning to test cricket earlier this year and believes he can manage the additional responsibilities of bowling.

He mentioned that fellow all-rounder Beau Webster could play a significant role in balancing the bowling duties. “Shane Watson used to open the batting and bowl. People probably don’t realise how tough that was,” Green reflected on the challenges faced by former players. He added, “But I think I’m in a different place. Let’s say I’m batting up the top and Beau’s at six — he might take more of the bowling load.”

As the Ashes series approaches, Green’s readiness is a crucial element for the Australian team. His ability to contribute both with bat and ball could significantly impact the outcome of the series, making his recovery a focal point for fans and analysts alike.
