Fitzpatrick Critiques PGA President’s Comments on Ryder Cup Fans
Matt Fitzpatrick has expressed strong disapproval of comments made by PGA of America President Don Rea regarding the treatment of European fans during the recent Ryder Cup held at Bethpage Black in New York. Rea’s remarks, which defended the behavior of U.S. fans, were described by Fitzpatrick as “offensive” and dismissive of the European supporters’ experiences.
During an interview with the BBC, Rea suggested that the hostile atmosphere faced by European players in New York mirrored the situation in Rome during the 2023 Ryder Cup. He stated, “It happened when we were in Rome on the other side and Rory understands … things like that are going to happen and I don’t know what was said.” His comments followed a series of personal insults and disruptive behavior directed at players, including Rory McIlroy, who faced derogatory chants and even had a beer thrown at his wife by fans.
Fitzpatrick, who contributed 2.5 points to Europe’s victory with a final score of 15-13, voiced his frustration with Rea’s stance. “It’s pretty offensive to European fans the fact that he said that,” the 2022 U.S. Open champion remarked on Wednesday, just ahead of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. He noted that many American friends reached out to apologize for the hostile behavior exhibited by fans during the tournament.
Reflecting on the atmosphere during the trophy presentation, Fitzpatrick added, “I don’t want to speak on behalf of everyone but we did feel there was a little bit of bitterness when they presented the trophy there and shook hands.” His comments underscore the tensions that can arise in competitive sports, particularly in events as significant as the Ryder Cup.
The 2027 Ryder Cup is scheduled to take place at Adare Manor in Ireland, and the anticipation for this event is already building as players and fans alike reflect on the intense emotions associated with past tournaments. As the world of golf prepares for future competitions, the conversations around fan behavior and sportsmanship remain critical to the integrity of the sport.
