Experts Challenge Notion: Passion Isn’t Essential for Success

Recent discussions surrounding job satisfaction have sparked a debate about whether love for one’s job is necessary for success. Experts assert that passion, while beneficial, is not the sole determinant of a fulfilling career. The exploration of this topic gained traction following a viral TikTok video featuring a user known as the “9-5 Guy,” which garnered over 26 million views. His portrayal of a routine office job, characterized by stable hours and weekends off, received mixed reactions online. While some viewers found the simplicity refreshing, many criticized it as uninspiring, labeling it “boring” and even “the death of ambition.”
This polarized response reflects broader societal beliefs that equate career fulfilment with excitement and passion. From motivational talks to social media posts, the prevailing narrative encourages individuals to pursue their passions relentlessly. The popular trend of leaving stable jobs for freelance opportunities or entrepreneurial ventures often receives widespread acclaim, while those who choose to remain in conventional roles may be viewed as lacking ambition.
Shifting Priorities in the Job Market
The pandemic has shifted perspectives on work, leading many to prioritize financial security and job stability. According to Matthew Ng, regional head of technology and operations at executive recruitment firm Charterhouse Asia, these elements are now viewed as core priorities, particularly by those who have faced layoffs or organizational changes. Joel Foo, principal consultant at Ethos BeathChapman, notes that job seekers are now considering a comprehensive view of employment, including mentorship opportunities and flexible work arrangements.
The rising cost of living has also influenced job preferences, with many individuals focusing on base salaries rather than performance bonuses. A 2024 survey by Deloitte highlighted that the cost of living is a primary concern for younger generations, particularly Gen Z and millennials, who frequently engage in “job hopping” to secure better pay. Samantha Tan, an HR business partner at job search firm Seek, emphasizes that younger workers prioritize jobs aligned with their values, offering flexibility amidst financial obligations.
In Singapore, many employees belong to the “sandwiched generation,” balancing responsibilities for both children and aging parents. A 2022 survey by St James’ Place Wealth Management Asia revealed that 60 percent of millennials support their parents, with two-thirds indicating this commitment hampers their ability to save for retirement. In this context, job stability and robust benefits become crucial.
Redefining Success Beyond Passion
While passion remains an important aspect of career development, it is not the only pathway to success. Ng notes that passionate candidates often transition across industries and take calculated risks that can lead to rapid advancement. However, without adequate support, they may face burnout or stagnation. In contrast, individuals who prioritize stability tend to remain longer in structured roles, developing deep expertise.
Yet, this path is not without drawbacks. A survey by Seek found that 19 percent of Singaporean employees report dissatisfaction at work, nearly double the regional average of 10 percent. Many opt for “quiet quitting,” disengaging rather than leaving their positions. Neither pursuing passion nor seeking stability guarantees success.
Experts agree that engagement is key. Kenji Naito, group CEO of recruitment firm Reeracoen, explains that engaged employees are motivated and proactive, leading to better performance and resilience. Engagement can stem from various factors, including supportive leadership and alignment with company values. A 2022 EY survey found that employees who feel a sense of belonging are three times more likely to remain in their roles and perform better.
For some, a stable job is not a limitation but a foundation for personal growth. Charmaine Yeo, a 32-year-old beauty marketing professional, runs her own art label, Mochiak and Ahwoo, during her free time. Despite not being passionate about her day job, she values the security it provides, allowing her to explore her artistic endeavors without the pressure of financial instability.
Yeo plans to transition to full-time entrepreneurship eventually but understands the importance of maintaining a steady income as she develops her brand. “The monthly salary keeps me safe to try out different things,” she states, emphasizing the comfort that stability brings to her creative pursuits.
The societal expectation to “find your passion” can be overwhelming. Ng suggests that if a job does not ignite passion, it should still fulfill other purposes, such as providing financial security or flexibility. Clarity about personal goals is crucial in navigating career decisions.
Naito advises those feeling disengaged to identify the root cause of their dissatisfaction. It could be related to the work itself, the environment, or a misalignment of values. Sometimes, a lateral move or a shift in leadership style can rekindle interest without necessitating a complete career overhaul.
Finally, the workplace culture can significantly impact job satisfaction. Foo asserts that a supportive culture and leadership invested in employee growth can make a role fulfilling, even if it does not meet initial expectations. Grace Tay, a career coach at Workforce Singapore, reminds individuals that career paths are rarely linear. She encourages young professionals to engage in career exploration through conversations, short courses, and side projects to gain real-world experience.
In conclusion, while passion can enhance job satisfaction, it is not a prerequisite for success. Careers can serve various purposes at different stages of life, whether as a source of stability, financial security, or personal fulfilment. Recognizing that meaningful careers come in many forms can help individuals navigate their professional journeys with greater confidence and clarity.
