A’ja Wilson Claims Record Fourth WNBA MVP Award in Dramatic Season

A’ja Wilson, centre for the Las Vegas Aces, has achieved a remarkable milestone by winning her record fourth WNBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. This victory, announced on Sunday, marks her second consecutive MVP title and comes after a stunning turnaround for her team, which transformed from playoff uncertainty to championship hopefuls.

Wilson garnered a total of 657 points in the MVP voting, receiving 51 of the 72 first-place votes and 21 second-place votes from a national panel of sportswriters and broadcasters. She outperformed Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier, who finished second with 534 points, and Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas, who secured 391 points.

“My team knows that this hasn’t been easy for us,” Wilson stated in a video following the award announcement. “They counted us out and wrote us off, but we showed up every single day. It has my name on it… but this is for all of us.”

Stunning Turnaround for the Aces

The season has been a rollercoaster for the Aces. Entering the All-Star break with an even record of 11 wins and 11 losses, many questioned their postseason viability. However, the team demonstrated resilience, winning an impressive 16 consecutive games to finish the regular season. This resurgence coincided with Collier’s struggles, as she missed seven games due to an ankle injury, complicating her MVP candidacy.

Wilson’s performance has been nothing short of extraordinary. She led the league in scoring with an average of 23.4 points per game while maintaining an impressive shooting percentage of 50.5%. Though her scoring average dipped from 26.9 points per game last year, Wilson’s contributions extended well beyond offense. She was named co-Defensive Player of the Year alongside Lynx forward Alanna Smith, leading the WNBA with 2.3 blocks per game and averaging 10.2 rebounds and 1.6 steals. Wilson achieved several key milestones this season, including becoming the fastest player in WNBA history to reach 5,000 career points, accomplishing this feat in just 238 games. Furthermore, she set the record for the most 30-point games in a single season, showcasing her scoring prowess.

The Aces concluded the regular season with a 30-14 record, earning them the second seed in the playoffs. “This isn’t done. We still got some work to do,” Wilson remarked, highlighting her team’s aspirations as they prepare for their next playoff match against the injury-depleted Indiana Fever on Sunday.
