McLaren Poised for Constructors’ Title in Baku Showdown

McLaren is on the verge of securing the constructors’ title in Azerbaijan this weekend, with a remarkable seven rounds remaining in the season. The team, which has dominated the current Formula One campaign, has clinched victory in 12 of the 16 races held so far, including seven one-two finishes. Returning to the Baku city circuit, where current leader Oscar Piastri triumphed last year, McLaren could solidify their status as champions with a strong performance.

A one-two finish at the Baku Grand Prix would grant McLaren their tenth constructors’ championship and second in succession. Alternatively, if they manage to outscore their closest rivals, Ferrari, by nine points, they would also claim the title, provided that neither Mercedes nor Red Bull achieve a significant win. To illustrate McLaren’s dominance, Ferrari has only outscored them once this season, and that was by just six points in Canada, following a collision between teammates Lando Norris and Piastri that led to Norris’ retirement.

As it stands, McLaren holds a commanding lead of 337 points over Ferrari, with 346 points still available after the race on Sunday. They have consistently outperformed their competitors, with Ferrari only managing to score 22 points less than McLaren on average in the remaining races. Both Mercedes and Red Bull have also struggled to keep pace, having outscored McLaren only once each during the season.

Piastri, who is currently 31 points ahead of Norris in the drivers’ standings, has been consistently on the podium, finishing in the top three in every race except for two. Norris, on the other hand, has faced challenges, finishing without points on two occasions. Meanwhile, Ferrari has yet to secure a win this season, and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has not stood on the podium wearing their colors.

The upcoming race suggests a likely celebration for McLaren, who are on track to eclipse Red Bull’s achievement of clinching the title with six rounds left in 2023. Should this scenario unfold, McLaren would move ahead of Williams as the second most successful team in Formula One history, trailing only Ferrari. This would set the stage for an exciting drivers’ duel between Piastri and Norris, allowing for a competitive environment without team orders.

Ferrari and Red Bull Look to Mount a Challenge

Despite McLaren’s favorable position, Ferrari remains a formidable competitor. Charles Leclerc is seeking a fifth consecutive pole position in Baku. Team principal Fred Vasseur expressed confidence in their capabilities, stating, “We are historically always in good shape in Baku.” He reiterated the team’s goal of finishing second in the championship, acknowledging McLaren’s current superiority.

Red Bull may also have a chance to disrupt McLaren’s plans. Four-time world champion Max Verstappen recently secured victory at Monza, demonstrating his racing prowess. Last year in Baku, however, Verstappen finished fifth, just behind Norris, who had started from 15th on the grid.

Mercedes is also under pressure to perform better, particularly rookie driver Kimi Antonelli, after team boss Toto Wolff described the performance in Monza as “underwhelming.” He emphasized the need for improvement in the remaining eight races to remain competitive.

Adding to the intrigue in Baku, Oliver Bearman of Haas faces potential penalties after accumulating ten penalty points over the past twelve months. If he receives two more points, he risks an automatic ban, which would further complicate his season.

As the Baku Grand Prix approaches, all eyes will be on the track to see if McLaren can clinch their title and how their rivals will respond in this high-stakes race.
