Japan’s PM Shigeru Ishiba Resigns Amid Party Turmoil
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has announced his resignation to prevent further division within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). This decision, reported by public broadcaster NHK on September 7, 2023, follows the LDP-led coalition’s loss of its upper house majority during the elections held in July.
Ishiba’s resignation comes after a month of pressure from rightwing factions within his party. Despite earlier statements indicating he did not plan to step down, he faced increasing calls for accountability following the electoral defeat. On Tuesday, Ishiba stated he would determine how to take responsibility for the loss at an “appropriate timing,” emphasizing the urgency to address pressing economic issues, particularly those affecting citizens struggling with inflation and the impact of U.S. tariffs.
The political atmosphere intensified when Hiroshi Moriyama, Ishiba’s close aide and LDP secretary-general, announced his resignation earlier in the week. This announcement followed a joint plenary meeting of both houses of the LDP to evaluate the electoral setback. The Prime Minister’s Office did not provide an immediate response to a request for comment from Reuters.
With Ishiba as Prime Minister, the LDP-led coalition has struggled in elections for both parliamentary houses since assuming power last year, largely attributed to public dissatisfaction over escalating living costs. Lawmakers within the LDP are scheduled to vote on whether to hold an extraordinary leadership election, which could serve as a no-confidence motion against Ishiba if approved.
In the backdrop of these political challenges, Ishiba’s government recently completed negotiations on a trade deal with the United States, a significant step in economic relations.
As the situation develops, the political landscape in Japan remains uncertain. Ishiba’s departure may prompt a significant shift in leadership strategies as the LDP navigates internal divisions and public discontent. Further updates will follow as more information becomes available.
