Sabalenka Secures Back-to-Back U.S. Open Titles in Thrilling Final
World number one Aryna Sabalenka successfully defended her title at the U.S. Open, defeating American eighth seed Amanda Anisimova with a score of 6-3, 7-6(3) in a hard-fought final held at Arthur Ashe Stadium on September 9, 2023. This victory marks Sabalenka’s fourth Grand Slam title, solidifying her status as a leading figure in women’s tennis.
Historic Achievement
With this win, Sabalenka became the first woman to achieve back-to-back U.S. Open titles since Serena Williams won three consecutive championships from 2012 to 2014. The Belarusian star has now reached every hardcourt major final since 2022, demonstrating her dominance on this surface.
In a match characterized by powerful serves and significant unforced errors, Sabalenka outperformed Anisimova, committing just 15 unforced errors compared to her opponent’s 29. “I want to thank everyone who came here, who flew in to be there in my box,” Sabalenka said after her victory, expressing gratitude to her supporters. The moment was emotional as she fell to her knees after sealing the match with an unreturnable serve.
Match Dynamics
The final began under challenging conditions, with sudden rain prompting the use of the stadium’s retractable roof. Despite the weather, Sabalenka showcased remarkable composure, saving three break points in the opening game. Anisimova seized an early opportunity, breaking back in the third game, but it was Sabalenka’s resilience that ultimately defined the match.
Sabalenka regained control by breaking Anisimova in the sixth game, and she secured the first set with a powerful serve. The second set proved to be equally competitive, with Anisimova rallying to level the score at 6-6, forcing a tiebreak. However, Sabalenka maintained her momentum, dominating the tiebreak to clinch her victory.
Following her win, Sabalenka celebrated her 100th Grand Slam match victory, a milestone that reflects her remarkable career progression. “I know it hurts, but girl, when you win your first one – and you are going to win it – you will realise that all the tough lessons are worth it,” she advised Anisimova, who had previously faced heartbreak in the Wimbledon final just two months prior.
Anisimova’s journey in this tournament is commendable, marking her rise in the rankings to fourth place. She has shown significant improvement since taking an eight-month break to prioritize her mental health, returning to competitive tennis in 2024. “Aryna, you are so incredible,” Anisimova expressed, acknowledging Sabalenka’s achievements and the challenge of facing her in multiple finals.
This U.S. Open final not only highlighted the competitive spirit of both athletes but also underscored the evolving landscape of women’s tennis, where resilience and talent continue to shine.
