The Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) is set to foster India’s emergence as a global leader in research and innovation. During a lecture at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi on September 2, 2023, CEO Dr. Shivkumar Kalyanaraman outlined the foundation’s goals and initiatives aimed at creating a supportive environment for scientific advancement.

Dr. Kalyanaraman emphasized that the ANRF is dedicated to establishing the best research conditions for scientists and faculty. He noted that one of the organization’s primary objectives is to enhance the process of conducting research, specifically by improving procurement models to facilitate scientific endeavors. “We aim to create a Principal Investigator (PI)-friendly research environment,” he stated, “so that they can work more efficiently towards significant contributions for the country and the world without becoming bogged down by administrative tasks.”

Established through the ANRF Act of 2023, the foundation was created to provide strategic direction for research, innovation, and entrepreneurship in India. The government has allocated an estimated budget of Rs 50,000 crores for the ANRF over the next five years. This funding is intended to strengthen collaborations between industry, academia, and government agencies, ensuring that all stakeholders contribute to advancing scientific knowledge.

Engagement with IIT Delhi

Dr. Kalyanaraman’s visit also included a tour of the Central Research Facility (CRF) at IIT Delhi, where he participated in discussions with senior officials about the institute’s potential role in national development. He engaged with young faculty members in a special session, gathering insights on how to enhance the research ecosystem across Indian institutions while sharing the ANRF’s vision.

The CEO’s call for innovative ideas from IIT Delhi researchers is part of a broader initiative to create mission-oriented programs that can drive impactful research. “We want to encourage creativity and collaboration across disciplines to address pressing challenges,” he added.

The ANRF’s focus on establishing a robust research infrastructure aligns with the Indian government’s vision of positioning the country as a significant player in the global scientific community. By fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration, the ANRF aims to empower researchers and institutions to engage in groundbreaking work that can lead to transformative outcomes for society as a whole.

Dr. Kalyanaraman’s visit and discussions at IIT Delhi signify a proactive approach to building a cohesive research community that prioritizes efficiency and high-impact results. With the backing of the ANRF, India is poised to enhance its capabilities in research and innovation, which could ultimately benefit both the national and global landscape.
