Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, China, where he engaged in significant bilateral meetings with various world leaders. The summit, held on September 1, 2025, featured discussions on enhancing cooperation among member nations and addressing global economic stability.

During the summit, PM Modi met with key leaders including Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu and Nepal Prime Minister KP Oli. In his remarks, PM Modi emphasized the longstanding and special relationship India shares with Nepal, stating, “India’s relations with Nepal are deep-rooted and very special.” He also highlighted the benefits of India’s developmental cooperation with the Maldives, asserting that it is greatly advantageous for both nations.

Key Bilateral Meetings and Discussions

The official reception on the evening of August 31 saw PM Modi warmly welcomed by Chinese President Xi Jinping. Upon arrival, PM Modi was greeted with a red carpet reception at Binhai International Airport, showcasing the importance of this visit. The leaders took part in a family photo, symbolizing unity among participating countries.

On the summit’s opening day, PM Modi held a pivotal meeting with President Xi. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reported that both leaders recognized the essential roles of their economies in stabilizing global trade. They also discussed enhancing “people-to-people” ties through initiatives such as direct flights and visa facilitation, as well as the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra.

In a joint statement, the two leaders acknowledged the constructive momentum in their bilateral relations since their last meeting in Kazan in October 2024. They expressed a commitment to viewing each other as development partners rather than rivals, aiming to resolve differences without escalating disputes.

Additionally, PM Modi invited Xi Jinping to the upcoming BRICS Summit that India will host in 2026. President Xi expressed gratitude for the invitation and extended China’s support for India’s presidency of BRICS.

Engagements with Myanmar and Other Leaders

Furthering his diplomatic engagements, PM Modi met with Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the acting President of Myanmar. The Prime Minister reaffirmed India’s commitment to its relationship with Myanmar, aligning with India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’, ‘Act East’, and Indo-Pacific policies. They reviewed existing bilateral ties and explored future cooperation in areas such as development, defense, and border management.

During their meeting, PM Modi expressed hope that Myanmar’s forthcoming elections will be conducted fairly and inclusively, involving all stakeholders. He reiterated India’s support for a Myanmar-led peace process, advocating for dialogue as the path forward.

The SCO summit presents a crucial opportunity for India, particularly in light of recent U.S. tariffs affecting trade, including a 25 percent tariff on Indian imports of Russian crude oil. As India prepares to take over BRICS leadership, the outcomes of discussions held at this summit will likely have significant implications for regional and global dynamics.

Overall, PM Modi’s engagements at the SCO Summit highlight India’s proactive approach to strengthening international relations and fostering cooperative efforts among nations in a rapidly changing global landscape.
