India Submits Bid to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad

India has formally submitted its bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, according to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). The move is seen as a strategic step to enhance India’s position in hosting larger international events, including the 2036 Olympic Games. An IOA delegation presented their proposal at the Commonwealth Sport headquarters in London on Friday.
IOA Executive Council member Harpal Singh emphasized that this bid transcends the mere organization of a sporting event. He described it as a commitment to the Commonwealth community, focusing on delivering Games that are “athlete-centred, inclusive, sustainable, and future-facing.” Singh articulated a vision that aims to honor the past while paving the way for a relevant and impactful future.
The federal government of India approved the bid on October 25, 2023, allowing the IOA to sign the Host Collaboration Agreement (HCA) and secure necessary guarantees from relevant ministries. Singh heralded this moment as a significant step towards realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s aspiration of bringing the Olympic Games to India in 2036. He stated, “Successfully hosting the Commonwealth Games will demonstrate our nation’s capability, strengthen our international credibility, and lay the foundation for the Olympic journey ahead.”
Competition for Hosting Rights
India is not alone in its pursuit of the 2030 Commonwealth Games. Canada and Nigeria are also contenders, with the host city expected to be announced during the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow in November. The need for host cities has become pressing as the multi-sport event, primarily involving former British colonies, has faced challenges in attracting bidders in recent years.
The upcoming 2024 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will be a scaled-back version of the event, a decision made after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew due to escalating costs. Similarly, the 2022 Games were relocated to Birmingham after the South African city of Durban encountered financial obstacles that precluded its ability to host.
With a rich history of sporting events, India’s bid reflects a broader ambition to position itself as a global leader in hosting significant athletic competitions. The IOA’s commitment to creating a successful Commonwealth Games could serve as a critical stepping stone toward its Olympic aspirations. As the world anticipates the decision in November, India’s preparations signal a determined effort to demonstrate its capacity for global sporting events.
