Hamilton Aims to Reignite Joy in F1 Career at Ferrari
Lewis Hamilton has expressed a desire to infuse joy back into his Formula One career following a challenging start with Ferrari. After a disappointing performance in the Hungarian Grand Prix, where he labeled himself “absolutely useless,” the seven-time world champion is looking to shift his focus as the season resumes. Speaking on August 24, 2023, at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, Hamilton detailed his plans to approach the final ten races of the season with renewed enthusiasm.
The 40-year-old driver emphasized the importance of enjoyment, stating, “There’s been so much pressure this first half of the season; it’s not been the most enjoyable.” He reflected on why he entered the sport, asserting, “If you’re not enjoying what you’re doing, then why are you doing it?” Hamilton aims to set aside external pressures and focus on the “pure love” of racing with Ferrari, a team he has long dreamed of driving for.
Hamilton noted that Ferrari is progressing positively after implementing upgrades at the Belgian Grand Prix. Despite not having secured a podium finish since last year, he sees potential in the team’s direction. “We’ll take from that and build on that,” he remarked, acknowledging that challenges are part of any successful journey. “No one succeeds without going through those tough patches,” he added, highlighting his belief in the team’s capabilities.
His teammate, Charles Leclerc, took pole position at the Hungarian Grand Prix, further underscoring the competitive environment within Ferrari. Hamilton’s performance contrasts sharply with Leclerc’s, but he remains optimistic about the future. He stated, “I truly believe in the potential of what we can achieve together.”
George Russell, a former teammate of Hamilton’s at Mercedes, offered his support, dismissing Hamilton’s self-criticism as unfounded. “Of course he’s talking nonsense when he says something like that because he’s the greatest driver of all time,” Russell said. He acknowledged the difficulties of competing in Formula One, especially when a team is not performing at peak levels. Russell also praised Leclerc’s talent, recognizing the challenge Hamilton faces in a highly competitive field.
As the Dutch Grand Prix approaches, Hamilton’s commitment to enjoying the sport is clear. With ten races remaining in the season, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if Hamilton can find the joy he seeks and translate that into improved performances on the track.
